She was sedated once for machine work by our dentist to her teeth. He won't attempt machine work on any horse without sedation, as the tools are just too expensive to risk being damaged.

Mine too
The EDT still used a 'pin' thing LOL on the 'drill' thing

as he said they cost pennies if they break as opposed to the main bit which would cost hundreds to replace

Good job really as she broke about 2 dozen whilst chomping on the gag

Only once and that was my old boy, when he was 25, as he had to have treatment with power tools to sort out his bite ... bless him, it is quite surreal as he stood stock still for about an hour!!!

and I understand that as they get older the teeth get more sensitive..

... he also had his 'bean' removed at the same time, and double bless him, he knew that something was not quite right down there and up went his 'dangly bit' and unfortunately he was a bit sore for 24 hours!

.... but treble bless him, as he was so happy in his own little world, he was oblivious that his mate had gone out to be trotted up whilst the sedation took hold!

Sedated for dentals, which are done with power tools by the vet who is also a qual EDT. Any other routine maintenance which could be a bit dodgy is undertaken whilst they are still sedated.

Yes to be clipped - until I bought my own set of clippers (less than the vet + yard clipping fee) and after 2 days of desensitising last year i can clip fully without even tying her up. Clipped again this year and just switched them straight on and started at her head with no problems - amazing what a tiny bit of patience can achieve.

Still has to be vet-sedated to have the dentist though, he won't try her without as doesn't have the time and thinks it's dangerous. At least he gets to do a proper job and I only need him once a year not twice.

I agree in some cases. Before I moved down here my old vet would sedate the pony as soon as he flinched when doing a teeth rasp, because it was quicker apparently. Had his teeth done twice down here, the first time he was ok but the second time he got a bit upset and althouth the lovely vet did keep trying, eventually he sedated him because he said (and I agree) that it was kinder. His loaners have had his teeth done since they've had him and said he was perfect, didn't need sedation at all.

Have a friend whose horse is clipped out fully every month (even in summer) and has to be heavily sedated by the vet each time.

The shirexclydesdale needs to be sedated for trimming by the farrier. We persevered for 18 months and then got the vet out as it was dangerous for me and the farrier. IV sedation twice then sedaline three times, but next time she is going to be IV'd again as the last time with sedaline she was horrendous and dangerous, we are hoping that with time and her being sedated that she will eventually come right. She wouldn't pic them up at all for anyone to begin with, I now can pic them out and tub them, but she is terrified of the farrier. This must be from the past as our farrier has been fine with all the others for about 12 years.

she was sedated when she was first clipped 4yrs ago, but she is a little star with clippers now, she doesnt mind at all
thats the only time she has ever been sedated apart from when she had a prolapsed bowl when she was 3yrs old

The small fat ginger rescue pony used to have to be sedated for everything when I first got her as she was so frightened of men, being beaten etc now she's an angel to do anything too

I've had a horse sedated to be clipped, we tried it without and he ended up throwing himself on the floor in a tantrum he did get better though and after 3 years could clip him tied up in a headcollar.

I've had a horse sedated for the dentist as her teeth were awful and he needed to use a Dremmel to sort them out. I don't think power tools and a very awake horse mix.

And I've also had a horse sedated for the vet as she had to have her leg scanned and they have to be very still to get a good image.
