My youngster has definalty started to grow his winter coat. His summer coat is coming out in handfuls and he is going really dull and changing colour. This is the first winter I have had him and his colour is changing so much. He is getting lots of white hairs in his coat. Do you think this is because his dad was a coloured?

Pictures to show the difference ;

The pictures today were after I had been stroking him and he looks a bit dusty. I have been in and out of hospital so he is looking porky as he kept getting out into the other half of the field with lush grass. He was doing really well with weight loss but hopefully we are back on track now.Would love to see other peoples horses colour change due to seasons.

Yep - Cas has become very woolly - spent a full hour grooming him this morning! Unheard of! :p He's also become more white... he did this last year, then became more dappled in spring. I refuse to believe he's just simply growing out of his Baby Grey :D I'm itching to get the clippers out as soon as his coat's come through fully - can't stand having such a sweaty horse after exercise!

Mine will be living out all winter and is only 2 so no clipping for me this year he is really itchy at the moment bless him. It is amazing how different his coat looks and all these white hairs have come. If I had a grey I would never like them to grow out of their baby dark grey/dapples. It was frosty on my car this morning :(. But thankful we still have loads of grass still.

All mine are starting to look flufy now. Took my 3 year old out for a short hack today and she came back very sweaty under her saddle. I don't really want to clip her as she will only be doing light work until about christmas and then she will be having a break but i don't think i will be able to work her without clipping as she gets a really thick winter coat.

Yep both of mine are starting to fluff up but as unbroken 2 and 3 yr olds no clipping this year! Although Im itching to clip Tommy as he's sooooo hairy in the winter! He'd put a highland pony to shame with all that fluff!

JJ your horse is beautiful!!! :D

My older girl has got really fluffy, cant believe how fluffy for the time of year! But the field is really exposed so it always feels colder there with the wind coming strong

nope! both mne live out and are in 100g and 140g rugs already!

they havent been rugged (youngster - ever!) older horse hasnt been rugged since spring... but shes a little chilly and under the weather anyhow so shes being rugged up :)

Yes my 3.5yo has :( it's depressing! He's gone all fluffy on his chest, belly and legs. I always forget how yeti-like he will become. He'll be in work next winter so he can be clipped!

It was suppose to get to minus one last night where I live so it is definatly getting colder. Pad has got his excess chunk to keep him nice and warm so will not be rugging up for a while yet. Going to keep him naked all winter if possible as he should grow a really good winter coat. Turnouts will be on standby though.

Thanks RubysGold he doesn't look his best at the moment can't wait for next year already to pull and plait and get him out and about.

I was away this week for just a few days & returned to a horse that was a shade darker & 10 times fluffier than the one I left!

Clipped my hairy beast yesterday as after a lesson he was dripping.

2 weeks ago when the temperature was much warmer he was fine. I can not believe how fast his winter coat came through!

Yep Wee S is hairy as sin even though shes been clipped out all summer :rolleyes: and K pony has got a yak coat coming through but hes getting a full winter of just hacking so not all that fussed what he grows as hes not getting clipped :)
