Hat and gloves whilst lungeing??? bit of a rant sorry

i got up to the yard the other day to see the 2 yr old mini being lunged by a 10yr old boy (he has adhd so is not the best behaved)this little 30inch pony was being razed round about 100 miles an hour looked like a motor bike as it was practically on its side the lad stood in the middle lifting the lung line over his head then flinging the lung whip round after it 5 minutes later i heard his mum say just slow it down a bit.

i am sorry but i wouldn't say i am the best at lunging but i know the basics i am sorry but it made me sooo angry

i always wear a hat but not gloves might have to start now tho lol

I never wear a hat whilst lungeing unless it's something young/ unpredictable (but then all are unpredictable really...). However I always, always wear gloves, and I try not to loop the lunge line - I was taught to take it back and forth across the hand so your hand is never in the middle of any loop and can't get trapped. Although looping is so much quicker that I tend to do it anyway

Funny though, I would never dream of riding without a hat...
I agree though that to some people, lungeing isn't an acquired skill any more. It's more like something just anyone can do (grab Joe Bloggs off the street to lunge it, why don't you?!). I have a fair amount of experience lungeing as I do it quite often at work (I'm probably a better "lunger" than I am a rider!) and I definitely notice the difference when watching the same horses I lunge mess about with other, less experienced people.

Its like you say - everyone is different - anything could trigger any horse/pony to go mad... and im a firm believer that no horse is 100% bombproof.

I never wear hat/gloves.. but thats the risk i run.

Me too.

I am real stickler for wearing a hat when riding, and when riding, since my back accident I wear a body protector. However, I don't tend to wear gloves when lunging my horse (OK he may not be bombproof - is any horse, but he's almost there). I have started wearing a hat when lunging and admit that is something I should do all the time.

Yes you are right, but lighten up! Kids learn by having fun and messing about with ponies, they will ask for help when they need it. I am sure no long term damage will be done to children or pony.

[/ QUOTE ] I think the whole point here is that the child could be seriously injured or killed whilst they are having fun and messing about with ponies - of course long term damage can be done!

Ohh who was this?

I always wear a hat and gloves. Especially gloves as Yogi like to try to run out as much as possible.

I've broken my hand riding before and it's something I don't want to go through again!

ditto, plus the kids do dangerous things on an almost daily basis.

PS. I always use gloves and a hat!

Yes ponies should be fun and learning by doing is the best way BUT My point is they don't ask for the help because they don't know they need it!

Blackhawk - I don't even know! They have a 12hh dapple grey. Mun doesn't have a clue, young daughter and son who rides his trike everywhere on the yard.

Hope your new boy's going ok - least he'll be well conditioned to all the noise and kids!

Oooh I know exactly who you mean. I don't know them either, only met them the other day.

That's what I'm thinking though, Yogi will be bombproof after all this!

Any yard owner (commercial or private) that allows clients, visitors or staff to ride, lunge, load or excercise horses on their premises or also off their premises while in their employment without wearing a hard hat is asking for trouble. They should have a written policy/contract which obliges anyone carring out these activities to wear an appproved standard hard hat and be seen to be enforcing it as otherwise they could be open to a massive financial claim if an accident occured.

Under the occupiers liability act 1957 this imposes a common duty of care on an occupier of premises to ensure that visitors will be reasonably safe in using pemises for the purposes for which he or she is invited.
"Accordingly the law obliges you not only to avoid creating a danger to yourself, but to take reasonable steps to protect your visitors from dangers you did not create"

Carry out a documented risk assessment and carefully plan what you need to do to make your premises as safe as possible.

A riding school/livery yard owner will NOT be absolved of their duty even if a client/visitor/member of staff chooses not to wear an approved hat.

It is therefore essential that riding schools and livery yards inlude a clause in their contract with clients/visitors and staff that obliges them to wear an approved riding hat while on their premises or if in their employment off their premises while riding, lunging, excercising and loading horses related to their employment.

Always wear gloves and 99.9999999% of the time wear a hat when lunging! If its Dan involved you would be stupid to do otherwise!

Last weekend was helping at a competition held at another yard. They only have one outdoor school so the dressage arena was one end, judges car in the middle and then a 30x30 section to warm up in. When it was down to the last few riders of the day a girl (late teens early 20s) bought in a youngster (2 or possibly 3 at most) and started to lunge it in the work in area. It had no side reins just a rollar and the bridle and was doing a fair number of plungie wungies! now firstly we didn't think overly wise to bring in whilst the competition still going on even if last few competitors were friends from the yard and secondly and most importantly this girl lunging had no hat or gloves despite it plainly being young and unpredictable! I know its personal choice but if it had had a proper spazz then there were several other people and horses at risk in that arena...
