Hi
I have a bit of a problem - I really need a new riding hat (especially as I'm hoping to back my youngster next summer!) but I think I have a funny shaped head!! I've been to a local saddlery a couple of times and been through the whole trying on hats/fitting thing but have never managed to find one that fitted. (Think the people in the shop gave up in despair in the end!) Basically I've got a narrow head and I think I must be midway between sizes as they are either too tight round the forehead or too loose at the sides. The hat I have now had loads of padding strips put in the sides by the fitter (this was years ago) but the local saddlery weren't prepared to put that many padding strips in. All I want is a basic hat, nothing special, but I really don't know what to do to find one!!
Thanks in advance for any advice... :)

Which makes did the saddlery carry? Some brands offer a made to measure service for little cost. Charles Owen do this for roughly £20 on top or R.R.P

Ok, that's interesting to know! They had several different makes (it's quite a big saddlery which is why I went there) - think Charles Owen was one of them. I'll have to look into made to measure now :)

Contact ProTector. They can send you out a measuring kit and will make your hat to fit at no extra cost.
Great hats and very comfortable to wear

I find the 'sporty' looking hats tend to be wider whereas if you go for a more traditional showing type velvet hat they tend to be a bit more skinny if that makes sense?!

CO do not do made to measure service, they will come out get a hat to fit on your head then pad it out with foam strips. I got my hat less than a year ago and ask if they could make a made to measure hat and was told they cant do made to measure because all there hat shells are mass produced and if they made one to measure it would lose its saftey standard so they wouldnt be allowed to sell it, the most CO can do is advise you which hat would best suir your shaped head I have a peanut shape head and the best hat was a showjumper/wellignton hat (same shell shape) they could then pad the side out with foam, whioch they did and now is to big and rubs my hea dbecause it moves

Tipperary Driving Helmet is the only one, I have non standard head and though I fit a Champion Junior CPX3000 57cm, it moves if I throw my head back, my TDH is fantastic, and when I got jet propelled on to my head [backwards summersault], then later same day, was tipped off over the neck on to a road, there was no damage and helmet stayed in place. I don't think I fell off him again, well not so memorably, he was a bit reactive when he was young!

Your head sounds a bit like mine! I tried on lots of different makes when I bought a new hat back in the spring and found Champion suited my head shape best. I really wanted a Gatehouse as it has the 'higher' US safety standard but it didn't fit at all - and a hat that fits is always the safest!

my friend had one with a dial at the back that she could use to tighten or loosen it - think it was champion but not sure. she also had a funny shaped head!
