Do i REALLY need a velvet one with a flesh coloured harness?

I currently have a black JTE hat, but will be buying a navy JTE hat in a few days as that is fine for hacking, everyday, SJ and dressage which is what i spend majority of my time doing.

Will a navy one be ok for showing? ?

Depends on what level showing you want to do? If you want to do affiliated then I would suggest you get a flesh harness, if you just want to do local fun parties then they're not fussy but I wouldnt suggest the showjumping, type (selotape one!).

Its all down to personal preference and how much money you've got to splash out on a more professional look, a judge at a local show should not knock you on your hat but expect some possibly comments, just depends if your bothered or not.

You can get the Charls and Owen Show jumper in navy velvet with the flesh leather harness....if your wanting a hat more styled for show jumping if that is something you do more but will be suitable for the showing also, or at least more than the SJ hats with strips and motives on them etc, only difference is there not shaped like a beagler etc.

Lol i guess you would call my hat a 'sellotape' hat and i plan to buy the same but in navy.

Thing is though, out of all the hats i've had since i've started riding so 19yrs this hat is the ONLY one that has almost fitted me properly.

I seem to have a strange shaped head and all the other types velvet, skull etc either sit perched on top of my head or if i get them bigger so they come down over my forehead they then flop onto my nose and over my eyes.

Do you think the velvet flesh coloured harness hat by JTE will be of a similar fit to their hat i have currently?

Navy is the correct colour for showing, I like to wear my beagler whereever possible (thanks to FMM converting me!) however I always carry my strapped one (flesh colour) too on the lorry in case they are enforcing safety - try getting the beagler off me, I have to prise it off my head!

Just wanted to say have you tried different makes? I guess you have! but Champion hats tend to fit people with round heads & Charles Owen oval, Just a thought.

I do think you should take your boy to the Kent Show, by the way think of the experience! may be we will be with you next year? and GOOD luck!!

Hmmm think I must a strange head shape too because most hats look perched on my head or are too big, or just look flipping massive on me and I look really funny! or fit like a cycle helmet...which I know some styles do but I really like them to come down a bit more at the back.

I never actually bought a JTE but I can remember trying one on at a show a few years ago, only did it in the black but it was a junior and it fitted better than the 'adult sizes' my jockey skull is also a Charles and Owen 'children's range' one....I must a narrow but long head...but I can never find hats to fit me well I'm still searching for one now lol!

Yes tried all sorts. JTE has been best fit so far and i've had current one for about 4yrs i think so it definitely needs replacing.

If the JTE velvet is same fit as their other hats its all good!

Ah sounds like you have a similar shaped head to me then!

My JTE one is 7 1/4 so whether i will need a 7 1/4 in the velvet one or the next size up ? Whatever that is?

So can't get away with a 'sellotape' hat for County level showing then? Definite no?

you will not get away with one for county shows. i found that they were similar sizes, i ride at home in a 7 1/4 skullcap, my show hat (the one in the link above) is a 7 1/4.
My last show hat (which i unfortunately dyed purple) gave me headaches for the first season i wore it, and by this year (4 years old never had a fall in it) it was lovely and i could wear it all day but it was soo faded that i tried to dye it again and it went purple! so i got one of the junior jte hats in the link above.

Thanks for the link, seems to be quite good for prices there!

Well think i shall stick to JTE, i guess £32.50 is not that much for a hat really!

And i could use it for dressage and showjumping too so it wouldn't be wasted.

If your showing at an agricultrial show, it might be best to rally round some of your horsey mates to see if anyone has a more appropriate showing hat...beagler/hunt cap (depending on their safety rules re hats) or something more traditional looking (velvet and blue) that fits you (if thats poss) as I don't like to say it but you will stick out like a sore thumb with a SJ hat on, get yourself on ebay and see if you can grab a bargain!

Ah they all have smaller and more normal shaped heads than i do! So no luck there unfortunately....

Oh boo, this showing malarky is more expensive than i first thought!!

Ah you won't just wave you'll have to come over and say hello! And assist my instructor in shouting at me if need be!

That made me laugh - I had my first lesson in a while last week, by the time my instructor left she had a sore thought! shows haw bad I am!!

Yes mine is coming to shout at me, i told her she'd probably need to as am bound to be REALLY scared by the time the actual day comes around and will need her to shout what i'm supposed to be doing !

Am a little worried bout this weekend as haven't had a lesson for a couple of weeks and i wont' be having one before the show on Sunday AHHH!!!

Hey, With the 'Sellotape' hats you have to be really careful, as there are many sold on the market which arent up to the safety standard!
Just a thought
