I think that people who don't wear a protective hat whilst riding must have nothing worthwhile in their brain to protect

I'm all for freedom of choice but would never ride without a hat.Even if it is the persons choice it will affect many people in that persons life(families etc) imo think its selfish if you've got kids. Also outcome may not be death but severe disablement/brain damage which could result in long term care at home or in a specialised care home!!Also finacial implications if unable to work esp if you have house etc to pay for.
Just think that the protection is there silly not to use it to minimise the risks

Does a brain mush in 3ft of soft snow? Just wondering as I know a couple of people over here who generally wear riding hats but they never do in the winter. They always wear the same as me (and everyone else), a fur trappers hat. Now is it just because it is so darned cold or do you think they have rationalised this and come up with the idea that brains don't mush in snow.....? Maybe I will ask them one day.

[/ QUOTE ] Well as I don't know you personally I'm not qualified to answer that one!

[/ QUOTE ] Probably not - but horses hooves, tree branches and fenceposts retain their brain-crushing qualities

i liked someones comment, think it was Spencer's actually, about Anky riding at the convention, pregnant and with no hat on. Like he said at the end of the day its her head she can do what she wants, shes not hurting anyone by riding without a hat on, its her choice.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree. If you have family and friends you would be hurting them should an awful accident happen.

Totally agree.
And our money and resources if they do come off and need treatment and aftercare (maybe forever)

Everyone knows that riding is dangerous but why make it even more dangerous than it has to be?

When i was younger I thought it was so uncool to wear a hat - my mum and i rowed over it for years. Whenever she wasn't around I would school with no hat on and only put a beagler on to hack out - when she was around I wore my proper hat!!!
We don't argue anymore, I have come to realise how much I love my head and brain just as they are!!!!
I did gallop up my fields for about ten mins this summer with only a stetson on for some photos and the funny thing was after years of not wanting to wear a hat it felt so wierd not to have one on and i felt really vulnerable galloping on my not so reliable horse!!

It is like a seatbelt and apart from on private land (as it can't be enforced) I think hats should be compulsory and I think all insurance should be void if the rider wasn't wearing one.
