Hat or no hat?

Always a hat, I've never EVER rode without one and never will, they're crutial for safety and I think anyone who doesn't wear one is absolutely bonkers, but each to their own I suppose.

I know its *unlikely* to unseat someone but I always think when people say they know their horses so well - what if said horse tripped?

Our sand school membrane is shocking in places and my horse has gone down onto his knees before .. I dont know, just a thought.

I always wear a hat and a body procetor reguardless of where I'm riding - If I'm sat on my pony I'm wearing both. And I will out right refuse to ride with anyone who thinks that riding without a hat is acceptable.

My friend and I went to the common a couple of months ago. We galloped up the hill and her horse just spooked at the top. She was thrown to the right and was knocked out cold. It was incredbly scary. She was wearing a rubbish hat. Which I only found out when she was taken to hospital in an ambulance which I had had to call. I refused to let her have her hat back and she admitted that she'd had it for about 20 years. I was furious with her and took her to the tack shop and bought her a new hat. I dread to think what her injuries would have of been like if she wasn't wearing a hat at all.

If hats/bp's where very very expensive i would forgive people!

But why when its so easy to go out and buy a hat, would you not do everything you can to prevent a accident?!

Thanks again for your replies, I am actually proud to say I WILL be wearing my hat when I excersise my horsey today lol. And I will get pics if my partner comes up with me (not sure as he's not feeling well at the moment). I can't believe how much this has actually changed my whole view on it so I do sincerely thank everybody for their comments. I know people are saying why on earth is this being brought up again but I honestly didn't know it had been brought up before recently. If I hadn't I would still be riding without one at home and I hope that the others that DO ride without one will now realise as I have done that it's a silly thing to do :)

Alex.

Alex.

Glad that HHO has managed to change you view.

I rode a mare who I thought I knew inside out and thought she would never do anything to unseat me. I was cantering out in the field one day and she fell down a rabbit hole that neither of us could see nor knew was there. Luckily I had my hat and BP on. I got away with a broken nose, broken teeth and a broken arm.

She used me to get herself up (both front hooves on my hat and BP to push herself up) Without those I would have had much more serious injuries or worse. My hat had a huge hoof shaped dent and my BP was torn to shreds. Luckily she was absolutely fine and I was very lucky it wasn't any worse.

Always a hat. And most of the time a body protector too. I tend to ride young horses or problem horses, so you never know what may happen.

Even when I ride older horses that are 100% i still wear a hat. You just never know!

Unless I am riding at top level dressage or showing (which will never happen) is when I will ride in a topper or a beagler! :)

There are some lovely hats on the market now that don't make your head look like a mushroom, so there is no excuse really.

I cringe when I see the lady near me riding down the road without a hat on, wearing a bikini and smoking a fag! (How some people can bring the horse world into disripute)

EXACTLY:mad:

Why the **** are we even discussing this again??

Have you already had some sort of brain injury that prevents you from using rational thought ?

Give me strength........

Given the further comments from Alex regarding her change of attitude to this issue, I think this sort of personal attack is unnecessary. This is no welcome for a new forum member!

I think you'll find I made my comments before Alex said she had had a change of heart......

And Alex......I am really glad you have changed your opinion. I have seen first hand the damage done to hat-less heads whilst working in A+E, so it wasn't a random rant......:) it was more an exasperated mother-type one:)

She actually said this last night (and very glad I am as well)

I fully understand the concern as mitigation is the mantra I live by myself. I am just keen to see that once the value of the responses has been realised, that the baby is not thrown out with the bath water.

Hey ho :)
