So sadly I came off yesterday and will need a new helmet on the basis that the back of my head has been glued back together. Any recommendations on hats that offer better protection to the base of the head?

I am sorry to hear about your fall, make sure you are completely well again before getting back on another horse.

I am going to buy a MIPS hat when I get another horse, my main concern in concussion and the effect it can have in later life with dementia so personally I'd go down that route.
I will use my Karben Hat that Mum bought me for my Birthday in 2022 and I've ridden in 15 times for dressage only as less risk. Although I got violently thrown off wearing it I didn't bang my head for once!

My impression that one problem with old hats was that they came down low at the back of one's head. Then when one fell and ones head tipped backwards and hit the ground, the rim of the hat pressed into the back of ones neck.
The more modern hats go on from the front of ones head and dont reach down to ones neck because the protective ridge round the back of ones skull will now bit te ground first and prevent ones neck getting bruised.

I say impression as the details (rotationary falls etc) were explained to me in the shop and convinced me to buy a new hat. But I havent yet fallen off in this hat. My priority is not to fall off.

LOL @Skib it was definitely on my agenda to fall off, however unfortunately the local police whizzed past us with their lights on and we proceeded to go full racehorse mode and I lost a leather hence a bad end but hey ho. My hat was only 6 months old but I am wondering if it was the adjustable harness at the back that created the deep laceration at the base of my head or just the impact
