I normally put pony to bed at about 9pm.

The last few nights it has been getting dark at about 8.30 so have been putting him to bed at 8!!

Just want to climatise him to long hours again in the stable, it does not seem long until it will be 4pm.

What do you all do to settle into winter gently?

Mine just comes in same time all year round, around half 4/5. He might get an odd night out in summer if he isnt too fat and in winter he stands and waits at the gate as soon as he gets put out!

Can't wait for winter, i love it!

I'm getting ready in the sense that I've started buying haylage and that I'm sorting out my rugs already. BH is still out full time at the moment though. I have noticed the evenings drawing in though :(

I love it as well, no hayfever, no itchy eyes, fresh mornings so you are glad to get warm, wrapping up so you are cozy.

My first year of a stabled equine, so I am happy to get advice :). My old tb was a live out old year round boy

No riding for 5 weeks, frozen water pipes, lugging barrels of water to fill up the troughs TWICE A DAY after removing the icebergs with a pick-axe in -15.....

Thawing out pipes in the house so you can do washing.....

Horse feed frozen in the bins.....

Layers upon layers of clothing, and STILL your fingers and toes break off....

Slipping on the ice and hurting your arse every 5 minutes.....

oh the joy!!

I'm turning mine away until February. Half the battle done!! :D
I'm looking forward to it because I'm bored of summer now, but on the first day of really cold weather and mud I'll be moaning and wanting Summer!!

I'm getting ready, ponio is getting ready, he's all woolly! Tried some of his rugs on tonight, had first lot of hay delivered yesterday

Look, I've got the hay in, also got the bedding in - and do NOT want to use any of it till December please  Last years snow in November was a right royal pain

I like the autumn mornings - mist lifting over the fields & the sun coming out - tho not so hot I have to drip in a t-shirt, but enough that a light fleece will be comfy :)

Only about 4 more weeks of coming home from work & a early light dinner then off to the yard, before 'having' to go direct to the yard to ensure Fuzzies are still 'seen' in some form of daylight whilst still way up in the top fields.

ohhh you really know how to sell it don't you DS:eek::D
salopettes is a brilliant idea, i'll be raiding the parentals this weekend now lol, they're far too old to ski so i'm sure they'll donate all their old stuff to me:D after they've slapped me for calling them old hehe:o

Ok DS I get that , spent my daughters 5.th birthday thawing out pipes and the most of Christmas :( not looking forward to that again :) I don't like having a live flame in the loft :D

But I do like the lack of alergies.

Have lit the log fire tonight , it stinks, really do need to get the sweep out :D

Rug boxes all sorted and rugs clean and ready. Layered in order with a list on top to save me scrabbling around. This year I am buying some cheap back up stable rugs for my 2 as they couldn't get through the winter without being cleaned and I was having to do a lot of layering. Got the first 2 mediums and bidding for 2 more heavyweight! Bought another pair of thermals as well this year for me, and all 3 dogs have new flashing collars..Winter is vaguely OK I think till you hit January - then you have had enough. Money is tight after Xmas, its blooming freezing and the novelty of rugging up has well and truly gone. Plus which I get so bored of schooling after work! Its great to have the lights but it definately gets to be a chore when all you can do is school in the week. Last year courtesey of the snow we pretty much lost December for doing anything with the horses and turnout was highly restricted. Not sure who got more fed up ..

I'll be the one riding the noble white stead, towing a slain dragon....

:D

Hmmmm.....

I'll pm you the day before, don't want to tell the world on here, then get murdered because I didn't agree with someones opinion once....!

:D
