I always wear a hat due to personal preference. I have had a new hat every year.
I have 2 body protectors. One is for when start jumping at college and I will wear the other for competing.

I always wear a hat (bar the time I rode the shettie and then he dumped me).
I have two hats (both about 18 months old) and I am about to replace all our hats. Mine, son's, daughters. The children's hats are a year old.

I don't wear a body protector. My children do, and theirs will be replaced later in the year.

hat all the time and although i do think those who don't are a bit foolish especially round young horses it is personal preference and I won't hold it against them.

It is replaced when I fall on my head so not just 'any' fall or alternatively about every 3-4 years. (less for my every day hat)

Don't own a body protector although share my housemates. BUT I only wear it when doing XC of some description. current one 2 years old. will be changed if a serious step forward in safety standards/design occurs, if not when it becomes damaged.

I always wear a hat - personal preferance.
I replace it after I've had a fall on my head or it starts to lose it's fit.
I wear a body protector when I'm competing (xc) or xc schooling but I did used to wear it whenever jumping but me and mare have sorted our issues now and I feel safe enough without it.

I don't always wear a hat when I ride. I have several different hats which I replace when necessary. I only wear a body protector when I'm hunter trialling or cross-country schooling at a place where they require you it for insurance reasons. I replace it whenever I think is necessary.

I own two hats (three including my mum's smart hat which I only use for showing). Both are GPAs; I have had my everyday one for 8 years, although for the first 4 years of its life it was used only for competitions. I am about to demote it to spare, due to the fact that the lining around the inside is beginning to come away, and will use my smart GPA (5 years old - used until now only for competitions) as an everyday hat.

I own a body protector, but have not worn it since I quit Pony Club in 2003. Although I had my original jumping jacket made big enough to fit my BP underneath, I actually got to the point where I felt I was hurting myself more when I fell off wearing it, than when I went without. That said, I would always use it for cross country, and hunting too if I intended to jump. Cant see me ever replacing the one I have now - it has had so little use, and is unlikely to get much more!

I have a hat fetish

Sometimes go sans hat, schooling in summer.

I always way a hat- now, years ago I had finished riding my horse when some one asked me to help with theirs, so I mounted said horse and someone passed me the hat. However I didn't get time to put hat on as horse bolted at a car in the yard backfiring, I was thrown and landed very badly knocking me out, luckily I was ok, it could however been very different.

So not only do i always ride with a hat on, I always make sure that I have a hat on when I get on a horse for what ever reason, it sounds the same thing but there is a difference.

The only thing I don't do is wear a body protector, and I don't really know why, perhaps when I was riding years ago you just didn't see them, however my son always has to wear his, so I guess I am not setting a very good example.

It really is up to the individual, but I'm not sure what you gain by not wearing a hat apart from decent lookinh hair by the time you finished riding!

Always wear a hat- have 2 a black velvet one only used for comps (dr and SJ) and a Gatehouse HS1 (in silver). I usually replace them about every 4 years or so, however I seem to be going through the gatehouse hats like they are going out of fashion! Bought it in April after someone was killed through head injuries at an event I was at, fell on in at the end of August and could not put a hat on for a week my forehead was so bruised, so replaced it with one then, and about 3 weeks ago the buckle went on it so returned it to the tackshop who replaced it for me. So Three skull caps in less than a year - good job I only paid for two of them!

As for my backprotector, it's about 4 years old now and won't be replaced for another couple of years as it only gets used about 12 times a year and when not in use it is hung on a hanger in the dark. I use it eventing or XC schooling and that's it.

Always makes me wonder when I see people leaving hats and BPs on the back shelves of cars/in the light anywhere - do people really not know UV light degrades them pretty rapidly? I keep both my hats in padded hat bags (I now have a surfit of gatehouse bags!) and the BP is always hung in the lorry in a cupboard.

Well I've seen too many accidents with people not wearing a hat or leaving it undone or wearing a silly beagler out hunting to ever get on a horse without wearing a properly fitting, fastened hat. I only wear my body protector now for competing or xc schooling or if I am riding a dodgy youngster, or some BHS training courses where it is compulsory.

One thing you missed out in the poll is when the standard changes for hats for BPs - then I would replace.

I currently have 4 hats - a crash hat for hacking, one for xc and hunting, a GPA for sj, which I also use for flatwork for some reason, and a velvet show hat for the posh stuff. I am a hat tart.

I have a crash hat for every day use - but don't wear it every time if schooling, always wear one hacking. I have a beagler for dressage that makes rare appearances and has no safety standard at all, and I have a show hat certified to EN1384 that gets dusted down from time to time.

The crash hat needs replacing and my favourite choice at the moment would the LAS hat, which has a bit of a following amongst jockeys but is rarely seen elsewhere ( it doesn't have a kitemark either -oooer)

always wear my hat it gets replaced after a major fall or every 18mth/2yrs, when the standard changes or i feel like getting a new one!

only wear BP for jumping as im not as 'nimble' with it on, I cant get on from the ground without lengthening my stirrups & i dont like the restriction when im trying to work Linx. ive had it 2years now & it will get replaced when the 'red shows', or if i have a fall.

My hat gets replaced when I feel it needs to be. My last one was replaced when we had a little accident whe trying to dye it blue again, so I felt the need to change it.

Seriously though, if I had a bad fall or I felt my hat needed to go to hat heaven then it would get replaced.

I never wear a body protector, infact I dont even own one but its very rare I leave the ground. I have ridden in one once and I fell off as my body couldnt wiggle to stay on. I ended up doing a summersault and landing on my backside, at least it was well padded

I always wear a hat for riding and most of the time when I'm lunging too! I think its a bad idea not to wear a hat when riding, but for an adult it is a matter of personal choice.

I used to wear a BP when I was a beginner and pretty nervous. I no longer wear one, but I might re-consider if I jumped - I concentrate on flatwork.

When I bought a new body protector for XC this year, I kept my old 1 and downgraded for jumping (training) in the school. Its 5 years old, but is sufficient for hitting sand or knock-down fences.

i always wear a hat when riding, have not worn a hat when riding a total of 3 times, twice where i have got on and forgotten to put it on so jumped off and put one on, and one because i was only sitting on my friend horse while we were standing in the sand school.

and i didnt used to own a body protector until last year, and im on my second one now. that was because i grew out of my old one, but i will get a new one when my current one gets worn ot ripped or something along the lines of that.

i wear my body protector when in competitions, usually when jumping, when riding new/young/unpredictable horses, when doing fast work on hacks or if i am showing off someones horse

(i get told to anyways if i show off a horse)

Always wear a hat, and have two, one for everyday and one for 'best'. I own a body protector and hate it, I feel that I am more unsafe with it than without. I think it is too long in the back and can't find one that isn't. I do wear a body guard jacket for hacking except in good weather.
