Following an earlier post can I show my ignorance and ask why you shouldn't do cross country in a hat with a peak? I've had all sorts of hats over the years. my first one was velvet covered cardboard and sort of squishy, but I thought that at one point the peaks were supposed to crumple if you hit the ground. Do they not do that any more?

Because if you were to come off, and land face down, you would break your neck

The Peak does not bend, you should always skull caps with a silk on top thats why they are made to bend.x

silks covering a jockey skull will crumple wen fallen on, however plastic peaks (as used on the earlier post) are more likely to cause the head an injury as they will not crumple.

Flintus said they checked his hat..Ive done a couple of RC things, teams and qualifiers and whilst they checked tack, BP, made me take out eearrings and checked my armband and horses passport phew! they never said anything bout hat ( JTE one with the vent) am worried now in case i need to fork out for another hat

So why have fixed peaks at all? Surely you could come off face first show jumping or doing anything really, though not so much risk on a school surface.

I'm also thinking do I need a new hat for sponsored ride in a few weeks? They don't check hats but I don't want a broken neck. Worry Panic worry panic

That was exactly my thoughts Spider. You could quite easily fall off and land on your face show jumping as well, so surely they are dangerous for that as well? Not trying to get them banned or anything lol cause I actually have a fixed peak (I got caught out today at the same xc) but if they are so dangerous why make them? I've got to get a new hat soon anyway so now decided to get a skull hat.

I really thought the peaks crumpled. I have a champion Ventair which i guess is a showjumping style hat. Now I'm thinking why did I buy that. I hardly showjump at all. I need a velvet cap for dressage and showing and a skull cap for everything else.
I did fall on my face many years ago. The ground was soft and the peak of my hat just dug into it! No damage, just a little hard to get up again!
