I have a dilema. I've just had a fall, on my head on hard ground, and my head hurts. I'm definately going to replace my hat ASAP, this wasn't nice :(

My horse can be an absolute s**t at times, and he's managed to bronk me off 3 times this year already. (This morning I was schooling in the field, and a group of cyclists went past the lane, which sent some other horses who were turned out in a neaby field into a frenzy and they went off racing round and snorting at 100mph and my TB decided to join in with the high jinx, and I ended up on the floor)

So...the question is, is it better to buy cheaper hats and replace regularly, like the Onyx skull, which is about £35 or buy an expensive one, such as the HS1 which is about £125. The HS1 is probably one of the best protective hats on the market, but I wouldnt be able to afford to replace that after every fall - well not if I continue at this rate.

I have a Charles Owen hat which was over £100.00 and I keep that for competitions. For everyday riding I have the Harry Hall Legend which is £50.00, so if I fall it goes straight in the bin.

i buy HSI and will replace if i fall on my head or don't remember if i hit my head (if i can't remember its likely i have!).

i don't replace if i fall onto my bum, shoulder, back etc.

HS1 didn't fit my head so the yuo may find you don't have the choice lol!
but - i'd always replace any hat that i landed on my head with

would def replace after landing on my head, no matter what my hat cost (I was gutted when I had to part with my j3!). Keep an eye out for places that sell at discounted prices like newitts.com, I have bought a few charles owen adventura's from there for about £40 :) (also had a broncing beastie who didnt understand how much hats cost to replace!)

The way I'm feeling I think I ought to get the most protective one available. I think I'll see if i can leave work now, and I'll go to the tack shop and try a few on for fit.

It happened nearly 4 hours ago and I still feel very light headed.

if you feel light headed/sleepy/sick/struggling to remember everyday info you need to get to A&E NOW. Cite a head injury and you will be seen immediately.

I am the expert at landing on my head...Trust me, citing a head injury is the only time you will be looked at straight away..

Hope you are ok. You CANNOT put a price on your head as has been said many times before on here. Get the best British Standards hat you can afford, mine is the Champion Ventair and having worked in a tack shop and seen cross sections of cheap hats and the Champion hats (as shown by the Champion hat fitter trainer) I wouldnt buy otherwise. As with cheap rugs it will more than likely turn out to be false economy!

Hats are made to a British Standard and the fact that some are more expensive that others does not mean that they are safer (they may be so check which British Standard the hat is made to).
Once a hat has had an impact it should be replaced because the material within it (polystyrene) will have been permanently damaged by the impact as it absorbs the destructive energy and will no longer offer the same level of protection.
