hats!

thanks lilbonn, gosh thats not good with the child not wearing a hat, but as was said they do tend to want to follow the adults, look at all the girls wearing girl band stuff etc so i guess they think its the grown up thing to do.
think i may run off and hide now before i get letter bombs through the screen!!!

Dont run and hide - you were only being nice and concerned - and everyone else knows that too! Yr right I had this discussion with my (now big girl) when she was about 9-10 and didn't want to wear a hat - big mommy NO!!

Now - no hiding coz we'll come a get ya

Just as an aside on the smoking thing.... smokers will of paid WAY more tax than non smokers (fags are SERIOUSLY taxed!!)so technically have paid for their treatment... I know, I know not the correct way of looking at things but true non the less.......

Indeed!!
I once heard a statistic along the line of:
Government raise £2bn in smoking taxes
NHS spend £200m funding smoking related illness
Gov't spend £20m on anti-smoking campaigns

Think of the tax hike if everyone gave up smoking tomorrow!!!

I would like it noted that i wear a hat every single time i ride BUT in my siggie i have purposefully chosen pics of me sitting on the horse with no hat, as i wanted a nicer piccie, but before i get singled out, i am only SITTING on the horse, in 1 piccie he had just hacked 10miles and couldnt move even if he tried and youll note that the white mare in these pictures is tethered up, needlessly (having just had a bath)! SO THERE. now relaxing from my defensive pose

I'm sorry to say but this has been done to death...Adults can make an informed decision as to whether or not a hat should be worn....Children however (I believe) should be made to wear one.....and thats all Im gonna say about that *in best forest gump voice*

there have been soooooo many of these!!Its the same arguments every time, yet it still goes into a massive debate which is identical to every other one!!booorrriiinnnnggg!lol

It's interesting what has been said about children following what they see going on - this hasn't been my experience to be honest. I almost never wear a hat, however my 11 year old daughter always wears a hat now when she is out working with the horses. Even when she is just walking around with her foal, I will look out of the window and she always has the hat on before she goes to catch the foal out of the field.

I guess she has listened to what I have been saying to her and has made the decision that it makes a lot of sense.

Yes I did. When she bought the foal she never considered wearing a hat just to handle the foal on the ground. I explained about the interesting things that foals do with their front legs.....after that she never questioned the wearing of the hat.

This happened on my yard - one of the liveries/RI/dealer never wore a hat, despite having 2 volatile stallions. Then some of the other more impressionable liveries stopped wearing their hats. And then the teenagers (13/14 yr olds) started riding hatless until the YO gave them a telling off

Thankfully the livery has now moved on, and almost everyone schools and hacks in a hat again.

To my opinion..I think it's selfish not to wear a hat-a lot of people on here have children/parents, if you ended up dead, or a vegetable, or severely injured you may not care, but they will. I don't think I've ever ridden without a hat, it's not an inconvenience really.
Up to the individual though I suppose. I think it's more people assume it won't happen them.

Ditto TriplesandH exaclty. having had my head smashed and kicked in it makes me cringe that people ride without hats, inside i just think you either are SO arrogant that you think you are the best rider ever and will NEVER fall off, or you dont care about yourself/loved ones enough to look after your skull, or perhaps its just as simple as comforts more important than safety to you. either way seems pretty dim to me however i am very aware that i am very cut and dry attitude about these things !!!

No lizzie dont you dare run and hide !! Stand by what you believe in and don't feel bad for saying it, its nice that you care for others and what you are saying makes sense!!

people that get defensive and are getting ready to accuse you of lecturing them when you havent are the ones that dont wear hats because really im sure they know that really they have no logical arguement as to why they dont !!

sorry non hat wearers i dont mean that to sound as 'anti' as i do but i just don't get it one bit and i know the debates been done to death but still i find it odd !! each to their own i guess!

One important thing that everyone needs to be aware of is that under current legislation it is the owner of the property who has reponsibility for the welfare of everyone that is on it.

Therefore anyone that operates a riding school or yard needs to make it quite clear to everyone including visiting instructors that anyone riding, schooling or loading their horses on the premises must wear an approved riding hat while on their premises. In other words this should be included in the contract they issue to their liveries, and also on signs in prominent places. They also need to be seen to be enforcing it.

Which is just plain silly, people have to take some responsibilty for their own actions and if they are too stupid to work out how to put a riding hat on then why should someone else be liable?
