Have been offered a new horse need some advice....

Me & my OH have been looking for a new horse since we lost little Flaire back in January.
A friend of mine is giving up her horse after having a baby & she has no time for him, he is an 8 year old pure bred arab.
He has been sitting in a field for a year but is broken, just needs bringing back into work.
My OH loves arabs & has jumped at the chance of taking him on (he loves a project!)
We have asked her to lunge him a few times a week until we take him on (which is 4th September) & she called us last night to say he is starting to make a noise in walk & trot on the lunge.
She said its coming from his stifle. He is not lame she just said he is making a severe clicking noise in walk & trot but fine in canter.
Do you think it could be where he hasnt worked for so long or should I just thanks but no thanks at this stage??
I am going up to have another look at him tonight to see what this noise exactly is & if he is lame at all (she says he isnt but I want to double check)
She is literally giving him away to a good home where he will be loved.

Could you take him on loan initially to give yourself chance to make sure he is suitable and everyone is happy?

If it is his stifle it could well be due to lack of work but it could be something more serious so I'd want to check it came right with work and have a vet look at it before comitting to a potentially expensive problem.
 
Thanks for all your replies, Katt she is giving him away so Im not sure she would want us to take him & then give him back if we are not happy (also I dont really know her well enough to say that she would take him back if you see what I mean!)
I will call my vet tomorrow I think & see what he says, Im taking another look at him this evening to see for myself what is going on & see if he is actually lame with it as well.

May not help at all but a friend of mine had a horse that had a locking stifle and he 'clicked' quite a lot when he was worked, his locking stifle didn't cause him any problems unless he was stabled for a long period of time then it would lock.
I would have him checked over by a vet.
