My horse started the year with an intermittant lameness. By april / may he went properly lame. He had lots of investigations, and a small amount of tendon/ligament damage was found. He was rested (stable and pen) but got worse, not better. My vet then referred him for an mri scan as he was lamer than would be expected for the injuries seen. I have just ha a verbal report from the scan, they have found 3 little areas, tendon sheath, collateral ligament and cartilage problems but all slight and still do not account for the lameness. My vet does not think that I should just field rest him for a long time as he says that he will not rest the injury in the field if/when he runs around with the her in the field. Has anyone had a problem like this. They even suggeste that my horse may have a low pain threshold but I have never seen any sighn og that, he is a collumping cob, not a delicate flower.

Depends how much ££ you have left in your insurance. You could push for other investigations/second opinion, or you could take the view that sufficient time and rest will cure most things. Is it possible that your horse was extremely restless in the box when on box/pen rest? If out of ££ I think I'd go for box/pen rest without the walk between the two (so choose one and he stays in it), on a calmer/sedative and see if there is any improvement there.

One of mine has just come back from loan with an injury that no-one could pinpoint. She helpfully had a hooley in a small paddock just after coming home and aggravated it so I can now see the cause, and we're going for tiny paddock (stable sized) which will be moved regularly so enough grass, calmer and plenty of rest for a month before I even trot her up again. So far it seems to be working, so long as I can keep her quiet.
