This is intended as a fun thread.

I was just thinking this morning about all the ways in which horses have impacted on my body. I have 3 knarled fingers, my ring finger is permanently bent and I can't get any of my rings on it (not that I'd want to draw attention to it, lol). I am always covered in bruises. I have a scar on my leg and a premanent numb patch. I have now developed raised areas on both my corneas which will need scraping off, and which is commonly known as 'farmer's eye' and is due to wind, dust and sun exposure.

On the plus side, horses have kept me slim and fit. But I could have gone to the gym to achieve that!

So have horses ruined your looks?

I wouldn't say so, infact I'd say it's improved mine as I've lost about 3 stone at least and 2-3 waist sizes thanks to having my pony. If it weren't for having her I'm sure I might have ended up heavier and bigger today and that to me just isn't all that attractive nor is it healthy, infact it's probably improved my chances of living a bit longer too.

My little finger points in an odd direction after a jumping related fall about 23 years ago. My left ankle has been broken several times and I can no longer run on it (but why on earth anyone would want to run anyway, unless being chased by a bear, is beyond me)

well my shoulders knackered from previous accidents on horses so left shoulder slopes and I cannot lift my arm past shoulder height without pain, left thumb is deformed due to rupturing tendon - back knackered - metal plate in one arm - sciatica. Also have collapsed arches so flat footed.

But on the + side I look younger than I am, partly due to being Beauty Therapist i know how to care for my skin but also being out in the fresh air all the time.

I don't smoke and never taken drugs

I feel about 80 when I get up so they’ve certainly ruined my body! I’m another that tried to avoid mirrors where possible.

On the plus side they’ve saved me a fortune in makeup over the years. What’s the point?

Oh yes. Squint fingers and my face is generally *****ed up thanks to a little impromptu cosmetic surgery by the TB with his hind feet (love ya Alfred).

Bent first finger (haynet tieing syndrome) dry eyes most of the time in winter from wind and shavings blowing in !
I don't look in the mirror either unless I am meeting someone for lunch, usually about every 2 months, then I get a terrible shock :D

Put it this way if a shirt/boot/trouser hasn’t got a hole in it it doesn’t belong to me. I’m always being told I should take more pride in my appearance but frankly who is going to bother getting dolled up to clear out **** and have to shower after anyway before starting it all over again? Waste of time and product 😂

Physically I have a bad hip from a fall so sometimes walk a bit like a zombie lol my hands are always so dry they chap and I have skin coming off the nails like I’m trying to grow out my hands. Nails are never painted cause they’re always short (never know when you’re gonna need to shove that hand somewhere!!)

Quite, as I say to hubby when I go to the town in my yard jeans. He say's "are you not going to change first as the jeans are dirty." I say *AND* builders go with paint and dirt I don't care what people think, this is my job and they need to deal with it. He even changes out his jeans which he wears (sat only) when he helps me into clean jeans and clean shirt to take the ruddy dog out. He says he does't want people to see him in shirts with damaged collar.

I’ve lost 2 stone and have a nice toned core. In my job, I have to be well turned out so I do make sure I look after the skin on my face and hands, keep my nails neat and hair trimmed. ‘Yard me’ is still very different to ‘work me’ though. I bumped into a fellow livery in the high street one weekday lunchtime and she didn’t recognise me until I was almost on top of her! Amazing what a bit of lippy and hair product can achieve :)

Short answer is yes; knobbly battered fingers, forget nice painted nails though kudos for equestrians who maintain these. Face and hair which largely sports the "au naturel"(or Clampit to be honest) look unless I have to appear civilised for work in which case I might have to peer into a mirror and do some rearranging.
Given up on makeup, it would be a lost cause.

Yes, especially at this time of year. Because I work with and have horses I'm literally never out of my yard clothes and wellies. My legs are black and blue. I could never wear a skirt!
I do make small efforts though. I always wear a bit of makeup as I feel it's a slippery slope and would be easy to not care at all about appearance.
I desperately don't want to end up like the classic stereotypical "old horsey birds" (o/h name not mine!)
I think it's important to take a bit of pride in your appearance.

Oh gosh yes I am covered in scars from surgical inventions following falls .
My lower left leg and knee are hideously misshapen and covered in scars
I have scars on my right thigh and pelvis .
My have several misshapen fingers and my hands are a right mess my face shows what happens when you spend most of your life outside in all weathers .
Hey ho it was my choice .

Seeing as I never had any in the first place - no!! When I was born I fell out of the ugly tree and walloped every branch on the way down!!!

Sounds like most of us are pretty much in the same boat. In the bath this morning I realised I had bruises all over my legs, feet and one huge one on my arm, none of which I recall getting. I normally don't bother caring but I'm going to Dubai in just over a week and will have to get my legs and arms out!

Yes and no. I agree with the previous poster who feels you should make a bit of an effort, but that doesn’t extend to wearing make up at the yard!

Like others have said, they keep me fit and I make sure my weight never goes up. If I can’t get into a pair of size 10 jeans I’m on a diet!! Other than that, I’m a slave to a good skin care routine, so moisturiser etc are essentials and sun block in summer. As such I think I’m in ok shape for my age. My hands aren’t my finest feature tbh, so no fancy nail treatments for me and I keep my hair in a short and sesnsible cut to cope with hat hair.

I lost a front tooth and an incisor as a result of a mouthful of hoof which didn't do much for the looks!

I turn up for school muddy and covered in hay so I wear the country look alright! :D

Yes and no
lots of lumps and knarly bits particularly hands. Skin a bit messed up through being outside in all weathers.
However, I'm slim and years of lunge lessons has given me good posture so can hide the mess under clothes..........

I spend all week at work in business dress so have to make some effort, which balances nicely with the evening/weekend/holiday look of casuals covered in hay/mud/gob/feed/poo. I dress for function not for style! Life just isn’t like a Os of Sweden catalogue!

So horses are to be thanked for my ability to eat what I like and stay a size 10 and I quite like slightly muscly arms but that is balance by scar above eye, two massive scars on left hip (I look like a car crash victim) and a lumpy right hip after a haematoma. All injuries thanks to one horse. My hands are also a constant source of embarrassment!

Unlike everyone else I think horses make me fat! Getting home late / freezing / knackered equals poor food choices. Despair that neddy will ever be sound equals more poor choices and lots of alcohol.

My injuries have left me with no obvious scarring, though, so I can still scrub up pretty well!

My hands are beyond help. No amount of swarfega can remove that ingrained muck on my fingers. I saw parents clocking them at parents evening. I pride myself on being able to look ‘normal’ at work, but those hands give me away...
