Basically got Cinnamon in from the field this evening and noticed something wasn't right with him, he wasn't placing his off hind right, he wasn't so bad when we where walking down the dirt track thing, but when we got on the concrete, it was clear that it was hurting him as he kept resting that leg and in walk he was having difficulty weight bearing on it. Picked his foot out and noticed in his frog there looked to be a small puncture wound that was oozing pus slightly.
Put his foot in hot salt water ,for all of about 30 seconds, then he kicked the bucket over. My friend got a syringe in the end and we used that to clean the area with HSW. Afterwards we just poulticed it. He is perfectly fine in himself, he is eating and being his general slightly bolshy self.
Tomorrow I was planning on changing the poultice and seeing how it looks, also how he is with weight bearing etc. He is obviously not going out in the field tomorrow and staying in, if it seems worse or he is not his usual self I will call the vet out ASAP. If it seems like the infection (which I presume it is) is being drawn out and it doesn't seem to painful for him and he is still his usual self, I was going to change the poultice and see how he is in the evening, possibly calling the vet just to see if they think it's worth them coming out to see it at some point.
Is that okay? I thought it was when I thought it out but I am a NBW and doubting myself now. I was so upset this evening (have never been very good if he ever injures himself, any other horse it's fine but my own is another matter!). I'm wondering if that plan is actually the best one. I've had nothing to do with hoof injuries for about 3 years as in all the time I've had him I've never had any problems with things like this with him. So would really appreciate opinions on whether I'm doing the right thing by him as I'm a big whimp and it breaks my heart to see him in any kind of pain
so I don't know if my judgement is best or what.
