I was bringing Sol and Red in last night, when Sol decided to have a bit of an 'episode'.
Usually, i catch both of them, then open the gate (there are 2 other horses out with mine) lead Sol through and then Red pops out. We've been doing this all winter, until Sol decided he didn't want to. So i got Red out, and tied him to the gate, and then lead Sol out.
Not quite sure what happened, but Solo ended up rushing a bit and bashing his off hind fetlock on the gate, with a right clunk. Lead them both up to the yard, put Red in his box, and started checking Sol's leg.
He doesn't have the best back legs- he has a couple of windgalls and an odd lump on his near pastern.
Anyways, I decided to find someone else to trot him up. Being half 6, no one was about, so I ended up making him trot a circle round me (not ideal, i know)
He was sound, so i cold-hosed it for 10 mins and put him to bed.
This morning, the fetlock was hot, and slightly filled, so I hosed it again and put his BioFlow boots on.
He wasn't lame.
On route to the field, Sol in one hand, Red int other, I meet the YD (yard dragon)
'dont leave them on him- you can leave them on over night in the box but you shouldn't turn out in them'
I just smiled at her, whilst thinking 'f*** off bitch, i'm 98% sure it's ok'
So turned them out. 20 mins later, they were careering around the field, due to a new horse being put in the next field- Im SO cross about this, as if the YM/YD had said anything, I'd have left my 2 in for a bit longer. The YM knew he had a bit of a problem, as i'd texted her last night. After all the careering around, Sol was trotting, and seemed a bit short on his off hind. So i'll have to see how he is when I go down after lunch.

I'm sure I read on the website that you can leave BioFlow boots on all day, can you?

And did i do the right thing regarding his leg last night? Anything else i could've done?

Thankyou all, chocolate biscuits and a milkshake if you got to the end.

oh great, thankyou. I had a feeling you could with the BioFlow ones, but not other ones, like the NEW ones.

I don't like giving them bute unless they are lame/ definately have a need for it- and the only way to get Sol to eat the stuff is if it's been in the fridge for a bit- and it gets nicked if you put it in the fridge at the yard.

thankyou, i'll go on the website now.

Dont think you're meant to leave them on actually. The magnets are supposed to generated heat to encourage bloos to the area to help healing. This heat, plus the sweatiness of wearing boots outside is supposed to be detrimental.

Also, you're not meant to use them on open wounds. Sorry

I went by what Bioflow state on their website which is what the link is to. I understood the OP's horse to have banged his leg, but not actually cut it?!

he doesn't actually have an open wound though- sorry if i haven't mad that clear.

it says on the website they can be left on for 12 hours if they're removed and wiped clean.

oh i don't know what to bloody do now.

eta- surely it is better to be walking around, wearing the boots, than stood still, not doing anything? If a horse is walking around wearing the boots, the blood is flowing quicker than if it is stood- therefore ensuring the magnets are benefitting the horse?

You should not leave Bioflow boots on the same legs more than 12 hours at a time. You can however, leave them on the horse 24 hours a day, but must switch them to different legs, ie fronts at night/backs during the day and so on.

edited to add : but don't panic because you have left them on - I can't remember how many times my mare's were left on when she was younger and the yard turned her out without changing them and she survived perfectly well!!!!

Don't worry about it! It says on the website you are ok to leave the boots on for up to 12 hours before you need to take them off so i would do that now that we've established that he hasn't got an open wound

Totally fine have you also go the brushing boots with that net type material which keeps the legs even cooler. Great boots, hope your lad is better this evening.

umm.. they're the older style ones- they are made of the same material as the equilibrium stretch and flex boots?

i'll probably take them off tonight and put them on when he goes out int morning.

i hope he's better- i've got a lesson booked for tomorrow night with a new instructor, who comes recommended for 'difficult' or highly strung horses, and im really looking forwards to it. If he isn't better, i'll have to ride Red, which kinda defeats the object of having a lesson with someone who's recommended for Sol.

thankyou everyone.

I put merlins straight on overnight without building up as there was nothing on the instructions to say you needed to....

He never got burns (have seen on here that its supposed to happen but never seen it myself) or any problems with his skin..... they might be a bit clammy in the morning but nothing to worry about.

His feathers did grow curly though!!! But now he lives out they have gone straight again.... weird!!!

We put the boots on Pop for 12 hours on the front legs and 12 hours on her back legs, she was fine and was turned out 24/7 at the time.
