I have adverts on a.n. other horsey website for two Dartmoor Heritage mares. I just received a website generated email for one of them, to which I responded with a telephone number (not a mobile) to call and discuss.

Within 5 minutes I receive an email back stating, in very bad English, along the lines of

'consider your horse (it's a 12.0hh pony) sold. Do not accept any other offers. I am happy with the condition as you claim. I don't want to loose [sic] this sale so please give me your name, address, etc. and I'll send you a British postal order (?) or bank draft and as soon as it has cleared I will send a shipper who will deal with everything, you do not have to worry about anything.'

It appears the 'buyer' is in Greece.

I responded with, 'No sale. Not prepared to sell the pony without a discussion.'

Sugar. What should I do? I stupidly gave them my mother's 'phone number (she doesn't have a mobile). Damn, damn, damn.

i dont think anything will come of it. Dont worry. anyone can get hold of a phone number, its your bank details they really want.

Yes you have. What's the problem? You haven't given them any bank details or addresses have you? Just phone numbers - they won't phone as it's not their modus operandi.

Also report them to the website on which you advertised with copies of the emails you have received.

Put it out of your mind and crack on selling :)

Don't worry, they likely won't call you, they simply want you to merrily hand over your details & possibly bank details..DO NOT. I suffered a similar thing on NFED and simply forewarded the email to the editor who blocked their ip address & blacklisted them from the site & added it to the beware of list on the nfed forum. This is quite common & I've fallen for the initial email several times too..usually they are more tricky to spot. Don't panic tho I'm sure all will be fine

If it's your mum's phone number you've given them - I'd warn her so if she gets scamming type calls she knows not to respond. All too easily people give out account numbers when their 'bank' calls to check something !!!!!

I wouldn't worry about it if you had proceeded they would probably send you a cheque for something ridiculous like £10k and then tell you it's in error but not to worry just transfer £9k back to us as we don't have time to issue another cheque etc...then you'll find there cheque is fake. Don't worry you haven't been stupid, you have actually been very switched on and told them where to go before it went any further.
