I have taken on these two ponies to help a woman who is horse clueless.... they are both alright looking but are not in very good condition. They desperately need feed/teeth/backs done etc but the woman is broke and wont get it sorted. Trouble is a "knowledgable" friend of hers has advised they're worth £3k EACH even though you cant actually ride either at the moment and one is suspected of having a serious back problem (last time it was ridden it threw itself on the floor).
Anyway - I'm tempted to offer her some money for them... have i lost it???
They're both about 15.2. Chestnut is 4yo ex-racer, Bay is a 7yo ex-polo pony (the bay is the suspected duffer).
Here are some pics....
What do you think?? How much would you offer??

try again....

You haven't lost it but where on earth do these people come from !! It never ceases to amaze me how many unsuitable people are involved in the animal world !!

I tried to buy a horse off a meat man once but he wouldn't have it and moved all his horses away so I couldn't bother him again !

I would only give a few hundred but she's clearly clueless about their value so you could tell her you'll give her until end of year to sell them or you'll have to give them back. She won't sell them at any price from your description.

You're very kind hearted to take them on !!

Is it not possible to ride the chestnut? If it is okay, it could be worth a bit more, say, £1.5k but the bay, if its that bad, its not worth much more than meat money is it? Couple of hundred.

They have both been ridden - The chestnut was apparently OK, but has a mega buck in it. It also reared up several times last time someone tried to get on it (less than one month ago).
The bay got progressively worse and worse in it's back. They said it was "cold-backed" but i don't believe in cold-backedness - suspect bad fitting saddle or something more sinister. It's also had locking stifles while with me but these seem to be improving as it's fitness improves.
I tried lunging them the other day and they were both rather difficult! I'm pretty compentent and confident at lunging but I was exhausted after 15 mins as the chestnut was trying to pull me over and then trying to stand up! they walk out in hand nicely though so i think a total rebreaking project may be in order for both!
They have no tack, one rug each.... and that's it!

I wish there were more people like you out there.

Its a very nice gesture (sp?) but i wouldnt pay no where near £3000 for both of them let alone one of them. Think you should ask to have the chestnut look over before you (if you decide to) buy him. They both look like nice horses and if you have the space, time and money, and if she will take a good price for them, then why not!

Sounds to me like your theory they have back trouble is quite likely... bucking, rearing and objecting to lungeing... I can see why you want to look after them and fix them, but be careful you don't get conned out of more money than you should! Do you know why they were retired from racing/polo?

i would say try lunging the chestnut more see if it was just fresh when it bucked/reared and see if its better after that to ride.

would agree with armhole on prices.... if the person objects tell her that without vet checks etc no-one will pay more.

one possibility might be to sort out you paying for the checks on condition that you are refunded (get a contracty thing done) or get a cut of the sale. or if you decide to buy them after the checks to take the cost out of what you pay for them.

The chestnut was dropped out of racing for being too slow but they dont know why the polo pony was sold.... i suspect it broke down but i dont know whether i'll ever find out.
It's so nice to have people to talk to about this - it's been bugging me since they turned up a couple of weeks ago - thank you all!!!

front legs are not nearly so bad in real life... but you should see the back ones

!!
She's really wonky behind - can only pick up one back leg to pick out feet and tends to trip over her own legs a lot... bit worrying but would only want her as a hack for my mum - the other one would be for me.

In all honesty I wouldn't expect the bay to be up to much from what you say - she may well have something bad going on in her hocks/back. The chestnut does sound like with total rebacking, it might have potential. I would be wary of having v high expectations of either though. Worth trying with, but not worth paying much for given the potential costs of physio/vet/back therapy.
