Well I will be starting my search for a Horse/Pony in April, so just checking that I have got all the bits and bobs I need for now. I will get the rugs, boots etc. when I know the size of the Horse I am getting. Heres what I have already

  • Grooming kit
  • Big water bowl
  • 2 feeding bowls
  • 2 small holed haynets
  • Feed scoop
  • Travel boots
  • Saddle cloth
  • Purple spray
  • Sudocrem
  • A stable (being saved for me at my current yard where my share is)
  • A hay and Straw supplier
  • Hoof oil
  • Saddle and leather soap
  • Saddle cover
  • Bridle hook
  • Breast bar

Things I've got to get are Mucking out tool's, my YO is letting me use her saddle rack and is giving me more haynets, shampoo, bandages, feed bins, Hi viz vest (waiting for delivery) Cotton wool, Shampoo, Baby oil and spray bottle, storage plastic draws.

I will be using my YO'S lunging equipment untill I get my own.

Is there anything I've missed?

I have things for me already, as I've been riding for years.

Vet (and possibly an extra one near whatever you buy to vet it)
Farrier
Dentist
Saddler
(Back person?)

Your yard probably knows a few already.

Very excited for you!

A good farrier vet and instructor to help you on your way !

A criteria for what type of horse you are looking for !!!

You will find no end of things to spend you cash on when you actually get your ned but to be honest the search may take a while ! There are hundreds of horses out there you need to make sure you get the right one for you. Write a list of all the things you want to do with it and make sure you trail EVERY aspect of that list!

Good luck with your search

Thanks for the replys :)

I have a farrier and vet already as I know them from when they have been up to do my share Horse. Will get some hibbiscrub though. Thanks :)

Also have my search critera and travel sorted :D

Hehe yes, I think I am in for the shock of my life! bye bye social life!

I got my new horse in January and had to do exactly the same as you. My one piece of advice, ensure that your first aid kit is fully stocked, even simple things like vaseline and clean sponges - there's a post on here from me last year checking that I had everything in my first kit.

I verified my checklist by trawling through the Ride Away catalogue and I also then compared prices etc on the web.

One thing I did make a mistake was buying full size headcollar, lunging caveson and spare bridle - my new horse has a cob sized head! Doh - so I have a few bits for the tack sale at the end of the month :)

Ditto on the instructor, vet, farrier... worth getting all of those things sorted.

Social life disappears but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Good luck in your horse hunting! :)

I am really grateful for the replys :)

My YO (owner of the Horse I've been sharing and very good friend) said don't worry to much about the first aid kit, as if I need anything that I don't have, I can use hers. I will get little bits and bobs as I go along though.

I am planning on having lessons as I haven't had lessons in about 4 years so probably picked up a lot of bad habits!, however I think will find an instructor when my Horse is home and settled and I've got to know him or her a little bit first.

I'm just trying to get the basics out the way first so that Im not paying out for everything at once

I also found the Money saving tips thread very helpful so will add some of that to my list!
