Back in my day (I am only 29) there were two types of hat

*Scull
*Velvet Covered (plain/flesh harness/beagler)

Pretty much every one looked the same....

Then suddenly every one had a stripe down the front and then the stripes became different colours and textures...

And now the new thing seems to be a scull with a silk only half pulled down at the front? This is a new one on me....

My simple question really is - Why if your going to wear a skull/silk - not pull it down?! Is it to look cool?!?!!?

I have missed some thing either way!
 
It's not a new thing I have used a silk like thus for thirty years it makes sure if the wind makes the brim at the front go down you can see.
 
I have always had the front up in my skull cover for the last 10 years....
Looks stupid pulled down, like your trying to make the skull cap looked like a fixed peak when clearly its not?
 
you see I find it really annoying that silks don't seem to be big enough to cover my skull cap. Admittedly I take a largish hatsize, but it drives me crazy - I'd love my silk to cover my hat, but it won't, so I go without

Well if its owt like mine....ProII ....thats the size of the blimmin' silk...it aint big enough to be pulled down.

Methinks it is to show the the luvverly gold skull cap underneath.:cool::eek::eek:
 
I said this to a friend the other day, it looks bloody daft! I used to have a velvet cover for shows and a silk for every day and it was pulled down to cover the hat. The kid I die for insists on having it nearly off it's pulled so far up to look 'cool' and because her mates do it...

I have to say I like my hat cover to cover my hat!
 
Always worn my silk a bit up at the front (not as far as a jockey would) always have for 20+ years- NEVER worn it backward though!!!
 
We always used to wear them halfway up as kids/teens because we thought it made us look like jockeys or eventers, & therefore cool. Now I just wear it up a bit.

Ahh - yes the gold bit on display - this is what I have seen!!

So is the size of silk. Fascinating!

RE: not riding in a hat - I know, I know the safety implications and horror stories to go with them, but would love just to be able to school at least in the fresh air if you choose too...

might as well have worn an egg box on your head for all the good those hats would have done lol.
I remember the majority of silks being tie on rather than elasticated and they were made of shiny 'silk' like material rather than the cheap nylon stretchy crap they are now!

:D yes i do - i have a lovely pink skull cap with the black silk fishnet tights look and i have in the last 20 years always wore my silks brim up showing half of my lovely pink skull cap, as others have said if it flops down you can't see a blooming thing :)

I also remember the day when it was a velvet hat with an elastic strap if you were lucky
 
Because it's too difficult to pull the damn thing the whole way down ;)
I wore mine without for ages then found it was getting a bit scruffy so decided to cover up. I only pull ( force) the peak down if it's raining to keep the rain off my specs :)

Ooohh.....I'm jealous. I wanted the pink but daughter wouldnt let me.:(
 
It's just fashion. I remember seeing it creeping in as I was a teenager (90s), but certainly as a kid we wore our silks on 'properly' ;)

I remember seeing flesh coloured straps appear on velvet hats (hated them for a while, then got one!), and I think the ventilation strips had just started to get popular when I went to uni and stopped riding (1999-2000). I didn't like them then, though I had one a couple of months back (before I landed on it) ;)

So have you missed something? Yep, just fashion and trends. I'm actually quite surprised there's been so little change in the 10 years between when I stopped riding (vent strips appearing) and starting again (STILL vent strips, just fancier!). I suppose there's a lot more diamante :D

EDIT: I guess it shows we're just a traditional lot at heart!
EDIT EDIT: I remember when I saw the silk-pushed-back trend, thinking people were just trying to be cool and look like jockeys, so it amuses me a bit to see a 'rational' explanation!

The XC peak

Flipped up so it doesn't bobble about in her field of vision at all. And then XC, the silk sits higher in case it slips down.
 
Lol! How random, I'm 33 and when I was a kid, my hat silk was shiny, satin type fabric that you attached with a drawstring. They were never big enough for the hats, and would always flip up at the slightest breeze. Thankfully, when the elasticated ones came out they were impossible to flip down so always stayed up!

It doesn't fit....
Mine doesn't fit ANY silks (almost). I've got a size 3 1/2 HS1 (yes, in silver) and it is colossal in size. No kiddie silks fit it. I was really, really lucky in finding a Large velvet cover than I can pull down to show but it stretches the seams so usually leave it a little bit up.

I still use the full 'tie-on' silks, I purchased a job lot of them years ago :)
