Im really sorry if Im being totally stupid and please no one shoot me down if I have missed something, but how is Jamie Grey walking free?
He must have been at the farm when the police and the charities arrived for him to assult a police officer, so why has he not been arrested for the neglect of the horses?

According to what I've read I think he got arrested at the time for criminal damage and assult of a police officer - they are building a case on the neglect of the animals once the vets have finished all the investigations.

I can't understand why he was not arrested either for cruely and neglect charges but I would imagine it's because the RSPCA want to examine all the horses so that they can then arrest him for all the correct offences.

I think that he will definately be arrested but even when he does he will still be bailed after a few hours . . . . . .. .

as soon as you arrest somebody for an offence you start the clock on hours they can be kept in custody and weeks/months before the matter must be brought to trial. Better to build the case first then arrest when you have enough evidence collected (sorry to let common sense and good practice get in the way of high running emotions)

i don't suppose they want to hold him because he's not a danger to the public, and they're chock-full usually anyway.
personally, i kind-of hope he gets some retribution from horse-lovers, but i guess we're a peacable lot.

I'm sure he has been arrested and released on bail. Even after someone is charged, they don't automatically lock them up. The decision is made as to whether they are safe to be allowed out on bail, pending trial. Then, if/when they are found guilty, they begin their sentence in prison or are given another punishment. Lots of things are taken into account and the punishment for animal cruelty isn't automatically a prison sentence. There is no way they would hold him in jail awaiting trial, even if he has been charged.

(Although my personal opinion is that they shouldn't bother with a trial and just go straight for a public hanging!

I hate to say it, but I think this is true. They never punish people properly for animal cruelty/neglect cases. Maybe he'll get 10 hours community service or something

Jesus the judicial system is sh*t.

Although I do agree in this case that the guy should go to prison, he hasn't been found guilty of anything yet! I know it looks pretty clear cut from where we are, but not all cases are and if it was standard that all cases like this were sent straight to prison awaiting trial then where would we be?

Until there has been a trial, we don't know that he hasn't been paying someone to look ater them while he was away or something. It would mean pretty much every case would have to wait in jail until a trial and while he should be punished, and severely, you can't bend the rules for each case - they have to work for everyone.

At the end of the day, he's not going to stab anyone, his horses have been taken away, he won't be allowed to keep any more - so there isn't a risk while he's awaiting trial.

Yeah a £100 fine and 10 hours community service sounds about right unfortunately. What he should get is life for each of the horses that he allowed to die in his care through neglect and then a good beating for each of the "survivors".
