Have admitted defeat. 22 year old home bred mare, fractured splint last year after a kick and then granulosa thecal cell tumour removal in august. She then got a nasty hoof abcess in november that was a stubborn b*****! Rumbled all winter and finally broke out of coronet in march! Ive tried on and off to bring her gently back into work but shes never felt quite right. Shes off in trot so can only walk and she stumbles on the moor which is hair raising!

So a life of retirement it is! Shes out in a herd, happy and glowing. Shes not bored, but a little tubby but hey ho shes an old mare, bless her. But i just wanted to share that i feel relieved that the decision has been made. She is likely to go on for years as a much loved lady of leisure!

Aww bless you are a good Mummy. I bet she gets her mojo back next spring and you start lunging to keep her mobile and suddenly she is back in light work. My 21 year old companion horse didnt know he was supposed to be retired so we started lunging and he is lightly hacked now and again and chuffed to meatballs when he comes back and reports to the herd about his adventures:)
