Well isn't it typical after several months of searching I've seen a horse who I really like the look of, but it is over my budget. Now I could actually stretch to the asking price (the owner will absolutely not move on this) but then I'll have used all my contingency fund that I was keeping for insurance, and the vetting. Also the horse doesn't come with tack which is fine but just adds to the overall cost and finally he's located miles away so there'll be transporting to pay for as well!

Now I haven't actually viewed the horse yet but have seen video footage and have quizzed the owner to within an inch of her life haha!! I'm surprised at how taken I am with this horse as he's young and green which is just what I said I didn't want but blimey there is something special about him and I'd just love to go and see him!

However, bearing in mind all the above do I let my heart rule my head and pursue it or just forget about it right now????

Don`t be a time waster! If you cannot stump up the asking price ,don`t go.It must have something special for you to be so interested though and me,well probably I`d just save up some more pennies. Don`t haggle persistantly though..it really does piss off a lot of sellers..inc. me.

I would go and see him first before you make any decision. Not to cause offence but people can and will say anything to you on the phone and if your excited about this horse then they have probably picked up on that and told you what you want to hear just to make a sale. If he's your absolute maximum budget then you have to be sure that he is right for you. Once you've seen him and decided that yes you want him, there is always room for negotiation. How long has he been advertised? What has he done/ hasnt done? Why doesnt he come with tack? All these can be used as a factor to negotiate the price even if they say they wont budge. Also take into consideration that if you do buy him at the price they want, like you've said you would use your contingency fund which could mean that you have a horse but cant do anything with it as you dont have the money for tack etc. Be smart, be prepared and keep your head about you and you might just get what you want.

can you afford to insure, get tack, rugs and a vetting (which will add another £1-1.5k) on top of his purchase price?

if so, go and see him.

if not tell the owner thanks but no thanks as you can't afford him (let her know what your top price is) and keep looking.
you may find they call you in a few weeks if he still hasn't sold.

She has the asking price though!

Just means she will have to spend more money afterwards.

OP, go and see the horse. Because what might *sound* perfect, may well be the not as good in the flesh. Once you have ridden this horse, then you WILL know whether or not you want it and if it's meant to be, you will make a way around. If not, then you have to carry on looking at least with no regrets.

With the ways things are sellers do have to accept people will haggle a bit! Thats life! You are fully entitled to, doesn't make you a time waster! Especially as you have the full asking price anyway, but I would certainly haggle! Without a doubt. :)

Go and see the horse, you may not like it when you see it.. If you do click ith it you can always borrow tack from friends or buy it on credit cards, vetting can also be paid for on credit cards. If your in any way uncertain then walk away..

As a seller it really irritates me when people try to haggle before actually seeing the horse, I don't know if their a good match or the abilities of the rider. If I knew the rider was right for the horse and they were a good match I'd be far more inclined to drop the price, throw in some tack or offer to deliver the horse. If somone asked me that on the phone I'd prob sa I'd come down slightly in price but not much, not sell tack and not deliver..

Go and See it, if you can afford to stretch to what they're asking then he's got to be perfect, and if he is perfect then you will find a way of getting the extra money to insure him.
I think you should always haggle, just not persistantly do it once or twice, and if they still say no, either pay the asking price or say its too much but I would be prepared to pay X amount, chances are they will call you if he doesn't sell soon!
Good Luck :)

Whatever you do, don't skimp on the vetting! Better to do this than splurge on the tack right away!
I don't know if you were implying or not, but I never recommend buying sight unseen (for the same reason the other posters have said). Video is simply not enough.
You will save yourself money and heartache in the future!

If he is young and green do you also need to factor in finances for any lessons/help you may need to bring him on?
Good luck with whatever decsion you make!

If you'll be spending your contingency you have to think of the horse too. how would you feel if you bought home horse of your dreams and then had to have him PTS because you couldn't afford veterinary treatment or something else contingency would have paid for/insured for? Sorry to be harsh but so many people don't think about how they will finance the unexpected. Happy horse hunting whatever you decide.
