Yes, I bought a horse that a man found too strong to jump! Some horses go better for women riders, perhaps because they fight them less. He is going well for me.
I bought a mare that was ridden by a man and I was told she was very strong and opinionated. I can see that in her but to be honest I've never had any problems with her, we seem to understand each other.
Not a horse (all mine have been bought unbroken), but my old jumping pony was jumped by a boy before me. He was 6ft2, 16 years old and weighed a lot more than me! I did get a good tune out of her though for the first 6 mths she was very strong to ride but when selling her on once I was out of ponies, most girls who tried her out just didnt get on with her. She was quirky, sensitive and generally not strong but required a confident rider with a good eye for a stride. She has jumped international pony classes with 3 boys since then.
ETA - I bought her as a 4yo with some competition experience and sold her as an 8yo Grade A.
My horse was broken and ridden by a man until i bought him at 4, at first he was very stong and leaned on me alot especially when jumping he would just run, then i discoved the man rode him in a seriously stong bit, i dont know if that had anything to do with it but i put him right into a hanging snaffle and he's a dream to ride now
I think that the sex of the rider should not really be an issue, a good rider with light hands can be of either sex. The weight issue can also be a red herring, as athleticism in the rider is as important as weight, and a sack of spuds is a sack of spuds.
Whether or not horses percieve an attitude difference in men and women, I don't know, there are some really weak men about as well as realy strong women, as far as that goes. I suppose it is all down to the individual, rather than the gender.
I tried 1 horse that had just come back from a long session at schooling livery with a Show Jumpier I'd not heard off and he leaned terribly and i was told I'd need 'to saw his mouth initially to get him round and then just hold it there' I go off after and 1o minutes- not for me!
My horse now had a man who I've become friends with since but he's about 9st and tall and a beautiful rider.
