Hello ,

This maybe an odd request . Have you brought a horse recently if so what did you get for your money or carrots in This day and age . Also where did you find the horse ?

So I am looking at the option of finding a loaner for one of my horse (competition horse) and getting myself something more manageable since I am not getting any younger. I am concerned that I won’t actually get anything that suits my needs for my money . I am disabled so would need a well behaved horse for low level dressage .What I have used to be a very healthy budget but now it’s nothing. I also have brought or sold a horse for about 4 years so not sure where the market at apart from being high .

I have browse in the usual places nothing is catching my eye. I have seen one nice horse who I like but he’s 4K over budget, a hand bigger than I wanted but he’s been up for sale for 12 weeks which seems very long for if he’s as good as the add says .

Just wondering what I could get for my money ? Thanks

The market is crazy still although slowing down. I had 4k which was nothing, but I stumbled across a saint of a TB. Hes got a bit about him but hes a safe sane hack, moves incredibly well and loves jumping. Hes also utterly charming and a delight to have around. Hes 6 which is a nice age. Hes an ex racer., his schooling is a bit green and he had 2 small flat sarcoids. If he wasnt he'd have been double my budget and a bit more no doubt.

If your small you get a lot more bang for your buck with ponies.

It doesn’t sound like you’re looking for a worldbeater so I’d be surprised if you couldn’t find anything for 15k.

But yes, ponies (especially if you’ll fit a 13 hander) will save you a lot.

I have a horse that fits your description there’s no way I would entertain selling him at 15k.
He’s a 16.2 cob very good on the flat about to go out BD he will be very competitive up to and including medium after that we will have to see .
He hunts he jumps he hacks he’s a beautiful colour .
He’s a rare as hens teeth .

Been 6 months since I was looking but I would think you can find something for that budget. Fingers crossed! But it might be slowing down for Xmas/winter, with fewer coming onto the market.

I comfortably had that budget and was looking for something similar, but couldn't find anything appealing, so I gave up and bought a 4yo!

He isn't ready for anything yet, is a big slow developer, but is great and kind. A thickset Irish BFG, with a reasonable engine and nice movement, but unregistered parentage.

Because of his age, and the fact that I imported him myself, he was under 10K. However, he is the 'sort' that everyone is looking for and I wouldn't sell him even for 15K now, already.

I did see a few 'near misses' though. A couple that were right on paper, just didn't set me alight when I rode. They would have been within that budget, so I think you will get something. It's just finding it!

He is exactly what I'm looking for! I have that in 15.3 already but want another one. You must tell me where you found one! Or sell me yours ?

Yeah, Gypsum sure picked the wrong year.

For £3500, I bought an unhandled 2-year old PRE. Very well-bred, lovely temperament, moves real sweet, but not even halter broken (well, she is now). Also, surprisingly pregnant. Tbh, I did not think this was a terrible deal for a nice young Andalusian. In fact, I considered it a win. Most go for a lot more. The breeder has also now realized this and put up the prices of all her youngstock by £1K.

For £4000, I bought a ex-feral green-as-grass Highland, who doesn't really do schooling. But he is very sweet and pretty, and he's an excellent trail pony. A couple years ago, I'm sure he would have been a £2500 horse, maybe £3K at a push.

I could never ever afford to buy another at the current market prices. Luckily .. with three in work and two retired .. I have enough horses ?. My only worry is that the three ridden are vastly under insured. One I paid 1.5k three years ago. He’s worth probably a good 7k now. Maybe more.

I found mine with a producer and sales agent less than half an hour away I paid 6.5k for him as a ten yo .
He was hugely fat and not in great shape .
We have spent a lot and worked hard to produce him .
He’s a very very special horse .
I am very interested to see how we get out BD .

Definitely sounds like exciting times ahead. I bought mine as a green 6yo. He had so much movement but no idea what to do with it. He's now 11 and consistent at medium, done AFs etc. I really hope to get him further. He has scope, the question is if I do! I lost my other cob in May and have a void to fill. I'm having the battle with myself as to whether I want another cob or a more obvious dressage horse. The problem I've been having is finding a cob that moves like mine! As you say, they are like hens' teeth.

I think the thing to do is find one young in Ireland and get it produced .
Then pass him on if the jobs not for him ( or her ) .
I have seen several very nice youngsters on facebook .
Mine is Clydesdale crossed ID although I think he’s got welsh section D in there somewhere whatever he is ,he is a nice nice cob and talented and versatile .

What a about a really nice not too wide ID .
I got one of those as well .
He’s working advanced medium elementary in points because we have not been out because I have been ill and he only competes when I can go .
His changes are not quite arena ready .
He’s a great horse in the arena he has a really cool head never any undesirable tension .
I would never sell him but he would be very desirable as well .

I bought a good year ago , paid 4.5K for a green but nice 15hh cob. He'd probably be around 7 K now. Prices are crazy and I wouldn't be able to buy again in the current market.

OP- there are only 3 ways to get a good horse:
1. Have the money to buy it ready made
2. Have the money to produce one and buy a rough diamond
3. Have the ability to produce one and buy a rough diamond.

My yard owner specialises in producing horses for clients , whether that's just backing and riding away , producing a sports horse or like in my case , producing an allrounder for an amateur rider.
If you can't find what you want for that money , you could always look at buying something a bit more green and then have some professional help with producing it.
But if you're after something a bit older , I would have thought that budget would be ok.

I've found word of mouth always to have worked the best.

Thanks but he would be far to big for me . I struggle getting on anything that big now I am older . I do have some hidden away but would rather keep that aside for the extra ie new saddle tack for the chosen one . I would be happy with an older school master type ie age isn’t an issue

Thanks another youngster would only be an option if it’s temperament was out of this world . Out of interest what was your upper age limit ? I would be happy with a 14’2 schoolmaster that’s 16 ?

Just keep looking .
Finding a sound older horse will be the issue.
I have found most of my recent purchases on Facebook .
So get on there and follow as many groups that might bear fruit as you can .

I really think people undervalue excellent trail ponies. Which I suppose is arguably a good thing for those of us who need one! I got very lucky and a bit over a year ago I bought an ex-Pony Club jumping horse (15.1) from a local friend of a friend for about £4K. Didn't vet, because he was already doing more than I needed. We bought him for his temperament really - he's one of the most honest horses I've ever met. I don't jump him, and schooling is not really his "thing", but he's such a solid hack and all round nice person he was an absolute bargain.

I'm a smidge under 5'8" or I'd have bought a pony. As it was, I did look for one, but big ponies (14hh upwards) that are suitable for an adult go for eye watering amounts of money. So I gave up on that idea. If you can fit yourself onto a 13.2 then I'm very jealous of you and would recommend you look for something that kind of size! IMO small horses / ponies are much better hacking horses, easier to do gates, get on and off etc.

I know of a 16yr old TB mare. Excellent results up to elementary, perfect to hack and a really sweet, gentle, genuine mare. She doesn't do jumping but that sounds like it wouldn't be an issue for you? She's just had a year off to have a foal but her owner has now found herself in foal too so has to sell the horses. She would be well within budget so you could even have her brought back into work professionally if you wanted. She's had a few foals so is pretty low mileage too.
