Have you done a midnight flit or left a yard quickly why?

Ive never done a midnight flit, but would not hesitate too if my horses welfare and safety was in danger.

I did leave my previous yard on bad terms though. Was very happy there at first but things turned sour, very small bitchy yard- only 11 stables but was filled with liveries who were incredibly close- I had a few runnings with them due to their behaviour towards me. YO was very helpful and great at first but had issues and I soon realised the slightest thing sent him into a frenzy- one of those being aimed at me. Despite that we were amicable and soon after I decided to leave- not due to YO but other concerns- one being school was incredibly deep, all 11 horses were as one herd which resulted in endless vet bills...the list goes on. YO was great and said I could leave whenever I wanted (my livery was paid and up to date) and I kept him informed of when I was leaving. Day I was leaving was complete caos, my mare's a handful to load so I was a little nervous and worried about the move. So anyway, I had left a bit of mess on the yard in which I said to the owner I would come back and clear, I needed to get my mare to the new yard as she stresses and panicks on a lorry (one incident being gashing her eye open on lorry) I had every intention of coming back. 2 mins after I leave im bombarded with nasty messages from YO demanding I come back this instance to clear up mess- even though he had agreed to me coming back later, he even added extra things I needed to "clear up" which was nonsense. He was pretty nasty, even so I went back that evening to find the mess had been cleared...never spoke to him since and would never touch foot on that yard ever again!! My horse is still recovering from the injuries that happened there.

Ive known one person who moon-light flit's on a lot of local yards, runs up livery bills and just goes. She's a nasty bit of a work and I wouldnt hesitate to call the next yard she decides to move too to tell them- one being she wants to move to a yard I was at a while ago...lovely yard in which I still visit, ill defintley be telling them not to let her on!

I think unless you've been in the situation where you've had no other choice but to "flit", you can't appreciate or understand it.

I've done it, I'm not proud of doing it, but at the same time I'm still on good terms with the yard. Sometimes needs arise, and providing nobody is out of pocket, it's not always the end of the world.

Not a midnight flit but did once remove 3 horses and all evidence of them ever having being on the yard in 2 hours.
I was taking my competition pony away for a 3 day competition and a fellow livery threatened my remaining 2 oldies and indicated they would not be safe in my absence hence a phone call to my friend with a large 8 horse box which turned up to the yard 45 mins later. 1 horse, 2 ponies and all their stuff was loaded and within 2 hours all stables and ponies were emptied and gone.
We did pay our livery bill for the full month but explained to th YO our reasons for leaving in such a hurry.

I've done it once and it was literally a midnight flit. I was going to move my pony anyway and when I went to pay my dues the YO who was an ar** and could be quite threatening said I could not move the pony as my friend owed him a lot of money. As she had moved to the yard with me it was entirely my fault so I was responsible for her bills!!!

I paid him what I owed and said I would have a word with my friend, went back in the middle of the night and walked my pony down a footpath, over a bridge and down a stream bed to the road. Put him in the trailer for the night, (he was only 11hh and big trailer) then moved him to his new yard the next day! I never heard a word from the yard owner but ex friend had to sell her pony to pay him, that was fair enough in my book though.

Never done a midnight but have left quickly (within a few days of advising YO) - always pay my dues though!

IMO if you are going to go, then just go - why prolong the agony?

I think its so unbelievably responsible. a girl did it to us, she went out hacking, her husband came back for the car at lunchtime. she owed my boss over £500 and thought it would be a good idea. The fact that she was on a contract aswell and to give 3 weeks notice?

I left one of my old yards after having an argument with YO.

This was 2 years & it was summer - my boy was out 24/7 & she wanted to stick massive hay bales in the field at cost to me as the others were losing weight. She wouldnt accomodate us at all & wanted me to pay £37.50 extra a week on top of my grass livery bill for hay I did not need. I went a few days later & friend of mine that was on the yard said she was spreading really malicous (SP??) rumours about me & even said I left without paying up (infact I had probably overpaid as I left half way through the month) Horrible woman!

I did once, 10pm, although that was on the advice of the SWAT team, who had just been to arrest the YO, who had locked us all on his land and was also the owner of a shotgun licence....

I did.

YO was a controlling, alcoholic with a personality disorder and her husband was a vile bully.

After months of deterioration I had become a nervous wreck. I found a yard for myself and two other liveries after I found myself sitting in the car across the road from the yard, too afraid to get out.

As it happened they were out when we were moving. I was shaking with fear that they would return before I'd gone. I was clinging to one of the other livery's burly husband in terror.

I left my rent in their feed manger.

YO continued her abuse on the new yard by coming and threatening me when I wasn't there.

It seems ridiculous now - I'd batter anyone who tried to bully me nowadays, but at the time they'd just ground me down to little more than a slave. It took a long time to recover.

A girl is leaving my yard, right now, without telling anyone.

Well, she told me this morning, and I told everyone else... :D

I did once, but texted as I was going to say I had left. Also paid the bill in full plus a couple days up till when we had left.

Reason being I had to have reconstructive surgery on my arm, and the YO wouldn't let my instructor (his previous YM) come to exercise the horse because she was 'banned' as she'd left the yard to work elsewhere, and because we dared ask if the horse could temporarily move to her new yard whilst I waited for the arm to heal (no riding for a few months).

He went crazy, said we'd have to pay almost full rate to keep the stable open, which is nonsense as he had about 10 spare..started saying how terrible the instructor was and said he'd "fix" my horse by lunging him 'until he has to be pulled out of the ring with the tractor', every day. H

e's also known to occasionally padlock horses in their stables, and we thought it was likely if we gave notice beforehand he'd either do that, or he'd make us pay the full amount and then kick us out within 24 hours anyway. Has happened before with him!

So yes. I would've loved to go back and just move the horse temporarily but he was not having any of that!

I have heard of a local yard who locked 2 liveries horses on the premises over a contract dispute where she was trying to bill them for livery due a months notice period that they werent aware of as they only went on short term livery and hadnt signed a contract! The Police were called and the horses were released without payment! I would never leave without paying my outstanding bills but do think notice periods can be a bit long in some cases as once you have made your mind up to leave a month is a long time to wait especially if you hate the yard!! At the end of the day the horses welfare should always come first so if your not happy about your horses care find somewhere else asap - dont stay and be miserable as owning horses is supposed to be enjoyable!:)
