Have you eaten/would you eat horse?

I haven't knowingly.. but probably have, because I like salami, chorizo etc.

I just don't fancy eating an animal which I know as a pet - be it horse, hamster, guinea pig, dog, cat or goldfish.

:D

ETS I could probably eat a hamster... not that attached to them. ;)

Yes, and its tasty. meat horses are bred to be just that, no different to a cow/pig etc

Totally get your logic, but there is a bit of my brain that still has a block when it comes to eating horse, just can't get the pet bit out of my head!

Totally agree though I've not eaten it myself, well I've not eaten a steak. But I do love a bit of salami or chorizo so am well aware that I have eaten it on numerous occassions. All those who are dead set against it had better make sure they cut out italian sausages from their diet :P

You see the herds of meat horses here in their massive fields and they aren't pets like our horses. They are just equestrian cattle.

No. I don't eat any meat so I am certainly not going to stuff a beautiful creature like a horse down my greedy face unlike others.

Steady on, I wasn't looking for a veggies vs meateaters debate, merely interested to know if, as horse owners, people who eat meat would feel that eating horse meat is outside of their comfort zone.

I have tried it (although wasn't told it was horse until afterward!) and I have to say it tastes nice. Not sure I would have done if I'd known though.

...lol.. Sorry. I wrote my comment post reading some of the comments on the article that had been written which really annoyed me!

No, I wouldn't eat a horse. Don't see them as food. Don't think they should be eaten as they are so much more than that...

x

Yes i have eaten horse and it quite nice, no different to beef really.

Like annother poster said they are bread to be meat so no different to eating a cow or a pig or even a chicken.

I wont eat horse either and never have.Horses are pets..When I lived in Holland I didnt see any horses in fields. I do NOT eat italian sausage, pepperonni or salami.

No and no!

I really should be a veggie though... I work on one of the only no-kill city farms in the country, love all our residents completely (even if they do occasionally try to claw my face off;))... I don't understand why I eat meat, my friends and family don't understand...

Ah well! In conclusion,
horse burgers = No.

Kobe Beef Burgers... = Hell yes!

Ooh I would. In fact, as I like chorizo, I probably have, but I wouldn't have a problem with horse steak. But I am a bit of a carnivore - I'll try most things.

That said, I wouldn't want to eat dog or cat. Something about eating another carnivore just feels a bit wrong to me - maybe because they're at the top of their food chains (sort of). Having said that, I did once eat crocodile which I suppose is a carnivore. I couldn't say I really recommend it, as it was actually quite salty.

Don't know which part of Holland you lived in but the meat herds certainly do exist.

Like most people never eaten a steak (but have ordered Steak in Belguim so in all probability I have) , read all the packaging carefully in shops so as to avoid the Paardenworst (picked up one in the market last week then put it down again when my basic French registered it was Donkey), but I am an italian Salami lover so have in all probability eaten some.

To be totally honest the only horse I think of as a pet is mine so as long as the menu does not say "Vardi Burgers" I am pretty pragmatic.

Oh lordie, here we go again!!!
Horse meat is expensive, at least here in Italy. If you want to eat it you have to buy it (specifically). It is not chucked into sausages etc to increase the meat quantity. Horse salami costs a blinking fortune, donkey even more! Italians have butcher shops for pork, for beef, for poultry and are very proud of their produce. If you are eating 'bog standard' salami and co. from Italy, you can be safe in the knowledge that it has never whinnied in its life.

No and No, but don't have a problem with other people eating it - the animal is dead and cannot feel pain etc. I am much more concerned with the quality of life of those animals intended for the meat market - not just horses but all animals too.

This - and as stated before I "may" have eaten horse in Belgium - it did actually cross my mind that it 'could' in theory have been one of the horses I'd owned previously (and for a couple of them it would almost have been an appropriate fate).
I think because we own horses as "pets" in the UK rather than farming them we are almost instinctively more squeamish about eating them, for the same reasons we don't eat cats and dogs although they are consumed abroad.
As a family we've sent cattle and lambs to be slaughtered - mum would usually swap with the butcher for one that we hadn't raised as she didn't want to eat an animal she may well have spent hours bottle feeding (we used to do orphan lambs). However Dad did tuck in with the biggest grin ever to the dexter steer that had kicked him in the nuts while being loaded :o :D

No and no. I gather it's very tasty but to me, horses are pets, much like my dogs, so I wouldn't dream of it.

Sorry but this annoys me (not much but some :D) If you can eat other animals, why do you place more importance on the fluffy pretty or pet ones? They are all living beings!

I'm vegetarian so don't eat any, but if I did I would eat everything. Cat, dog, horse, fluffy bunnies and butterflies on toast:p :D

No I haven't and I don't think I would. But having said that, I don't have a problem with the specific meat breeds as it were. As said earlier in the thread (sorry I can't remember who by) there are places where the meat horses are no different to beef cattle. I have no problem with this aslong as they are transported to slaughter humanely and quickly in good condtions (not subjected to long trips etc).

Urm... did you actually leave the city at all? They are everywhere!! And I'm assuming you are referring to the meat herds rather than horses in general as the Dutch will keep horses on any scrap of land.... every time I go home on the train (between Amsterdam and Den Haag so NOT rural) I see about 10 horses being kept on allotments (and yes they all look happy and healthy).

Not knowingly, and I don't think I've eaten anything suspect in a country that commonly eats horse. Although I've eaten "meat" in turkey, so who knows what that was - probably goat, I hope it was beef, but I'm not sure........

When I travelled to france and italy I was with a multi-lingual daughter of a french butcher so was more sure about what I was eating than usual!

She said that in france horse is looked down upon as a sort of peasents alternative to beef and so is now not very common. A bit like mutton in this country. She said it is ok but a bit like beef but tougher!

No I haven't been aware of eating any and I probably wouldn't, but I know that others do and I have no problem with that providing the horse is treated humanely during the course of its life and death, which is what I feel about all animals that we eat. I don't eat much meat anyway, but have a weakness for spanish and italian sausage

Annoys me too, I hate that some people make value judgements on what meats they eat and then (some of them) get holier than thou about it.

"oh I'm vegetarian, I think meat is murder, yes, fish and chips please, what do you mean? vegetarians can eat fish, they aren't proper animals"

grrrrrr

If it is down to welfare, for example rejecting veal or danish bacon fair enough but not just on how pretty the animal is. Personal squeemishness about eating an animal you see as a pet is just that, it isn't the same as being a proper veggie so don't dress it up as a welfare concern!

If you are taking the Line via Hoofdorp then you are probably passing mine he is out with a herd of 15 others in a big field but they are not meat horses honest!
