Have you eaten/would you eat horse?

Not on purpose, although I probably did in Italy.

Not all meat horses are bred for the purpose - many old workhorses from eastern European countries are transported long-distance to slaughter. I would not eat any meat that might have come from such suffering, just like I don't eat battery chicken. I always choose high welfare meat, and at the moment I do not believe it is possible to choose high welfare horsemeat, as there is no way to know whether or not the meat has come from a happy horse or one that has been dragged halfway across Europe, owing to the fact that the meat is labelled as a product of ther country in which the horse is slaughtered, not where it was raised.

Annoys me too, I hate that some people make value judgements on what meats they eat and then (some of them) get holier than thou about it.

"oh I'm vegetarian, I think meat is murder, yes, fish and chips please, what do you mean? vegetarians can eat fish, they aren't proper animals"

grrrrrr

If it is down to welfare, for example rejecting veal or danish bacon fair enough but not just on how pretty the animal is. Personal squeemishness about eating an animal you see as a pet is just that, it isn't the same as being a proper veggie so don't dress it up as a welfare concern!

Ooooh, don't get me started on veggies that eat fish. Or even eat dairy products or eggs for that matter (though eggs not so much in the UK anymore as the standards are pretty high). If you don't eat meat because you think its wrong to eat/kill/hurt animals but then will eat fish which has the most horrendous death you are just a hypocrit.

Me, I eat anything. I'd try dog or cat if I knew the meat was healthy and it had had a good quality life and humane death.

Haha, I work in Hoofddorp (get off at Schiphol). I shall wave to him on the way home this evening :)

Ahh may not work he is just before you get to Niew Vennup station but nice sentiment, if you could open the window and chuck carrots he would be made up

I have not but i would, same as i have raised chickens then wrung their necks and sent cows off for the freezer.
I am a meat eater and so therefore i would, i could not send one of my own away for the freezer as that is not their purpose in life
something be it cow, pig, sheep, horse etc that has been only given life to be eaten why not.
my family shoot, pheasants, rabbits, deer, pigeons and have no qualms about eating them fluffy cute animals so i would therefore but horse if it was on the menu or in the butchers

Don't know which part of Holland you lived in but the meat herds certainly do exist.

Like most people never eaten a steak (but have ordered Steak in Belguim so in all probability I have) , read all the packaging carefully in shops so as to avoid the Paardenworst (picked up one in the market last week then put it down again when my basic French registered it was Donkey), but I am an italian Salami lover so have in all probability eaten some.

To be totally honest the only horse I think of as a pet is mine so as long as the menu does not say "Vardi Burgers" I am pretty pragmatic.

I lived in Munster-Geleen for 5 months. Eventually came back to the UK.
I dont eat Italian Salami as its got horse in it!

I agree, I don't eat fish but no many vegetarians that do! I do still eat dairy which is bothering me as I don't agree with a lot of the dairy side of things, so think I will cut that out too. There is nothing left to eat! I do eat egss but also feel funny about those, I only eat free range eggs, but it still doesn't sit well with me.

If I did eat meat again though I would draw the line at eating veal or Fois grois (sp) just purley because of treatment prior to the slaughter etc.

Also why did you mention danish bacon? is it treated in a specific way?

Just to add, I feel so sorry for the fate of animals knowing we get to choose if they live, die, become pretty fluffy pets and so on. Aren't we a spectacular superior wonderful race...not. GAH!! I have an ulcer on my tongue so am grumpy :D

Sharon, Italian salami DOES NOT have horse in it UNLESS it a Horse or Donkey salami which costs double and is CLEARLY labelled as being Horse (cavallo) or Donkey (asino). Normal everyday salami is pork and or beef (apart from when its red deer or wildboar).

I have not eaten horse meat nor would I consider ever eating horse meat but thats because I have had horses all my life and the relationship I have with the horse is pretty much the same as I have with dogs and cats. My OH on the other hand has eaten horse and so have several members of my family at one time or another.
To some people its just another meat and who am I to judge them on that.
I do have to say though I do find it hard to get my head around people that do eat dog or cats!

Different welfare standards, it was on the Jamie Oliver TV programme a few months back, so ever since I've been trying to go for brotish whenever possible, but then I do with everything. Generally the welfare standards are higher and you can be sure about what you are getting. Not to mention the food miles.

A family friend is from a farming family and at the height of the BSE crisis asked in a very smart london restaurant whether the steak he was about to order was british, the restaurant replied proudly that it wasn't and it had been imported from France. The friend promptly changed his order to the veggie option much to the confusion of the waiter.

I read this as "My OH on the other hand has eaten horse and several members of my family at one time or another"

Think my brain is fuddled after that Parelli thread

No, I never would. I would also never eat any meat I wasnt certain was NOT horse (if that makes sense!), for example when on holiday in Egypt I didnt touch any meat there... too dodgy!

Be like eating cat or dog - no thanks.

Yes, and yes. Where was a 'horses for meat' thread a while back which ran for a while... basically, my thoughts and feelings are that as long as an animal (equine or other) is treated right when it is alive, I will eat it. I care about the living animal but once it is dead, meat is meat... I will eat it!
