have you ever been given a horse?

Yes I was given my nightmare showjumper free; had 16 "wonderful" years with her.

I'm offered about 2 free horses almost every single week - I took one but wouldn't take any more. Most have something wrong with them....usually the owner!!

My horse was given to me,(siggy) he was originally for me to bring and sell on but the owner said at the end of the summer that he didnt want to split us up. He wasnt sure how much he could get for him and his quirks but I would never have been able to buy a horse with his breeding .

Yes. I was given Ted. I asked to have him on a 6 month trial to start as I was worried about money. However, a year on I still have him and hope it to stay that was for years to come. He is an excellent horse and while he has his little quirks (don't they all?) I could not ask for better.
I Love Him!

Bud was a "free to a good home" type of horse, retired racehorse, stipulations as to what he could/couldn't do were all taken into account before his owner would let anyone else take him on. We drove 100+ miles to view him, I rode him and then had intensive interview etc to ensure I knew what I would be taking on. If his old owner hadn't have been happy with his intended "new life" she would rather he was pts. Only stipulation I do have is that he is never to be sold/loaned, which is fine by me,

he is now with me/my family for the rest of his days.

I bought a little pony from the sales, my friend and I paid half each for him, he was £30! (£15 each)
I moved away and took the pony with me and she gave me her half him!
Not really the same as being given a whole horse, but I sold him this year for £2500 so I'm quite pleased he was 100% mine lol!

Yes, I was given Berry for my 11th birthday and I was given Topper as his owner/breeder didn't want to deal with his freshly diagnosed lameness issues and was going to re-advertise him as free to good home. I still have Berry (19 years on) and I had a wonderful year and 4 days with Topper, before I had him PTS.

Yes, Sidiki a lovely 16.1 TBshire cross pally mare, she was 18 and the owns were emigrating. She was oriional a rescue. And Buffy and Ice, two shetlands that were sent to us to break and start showing, Ice turned out to be terrified of people, we rang them to ask and they never contacted us again.

I have been given 2 horses (Both oldies) I have the option to have another one but the situation just isn't right for me to have her. I love her dearly but it just won't work out with everything else.

When I bought my farm here in Canada the previous owner asked to leave his horses on the land for an extra month. In the end he pushed it to double that.
He had 5 Morgan mares roaming the entire 30 acres of land. No paddocks or land management.
He offered me one particular Morgan mare, who is vey pretty and well put together, but she is 6 and her only training is to wear a headcollar. She has it on 24/7.
Experience has shown me that when a horse has done nothing for 6 years and then is suddenly asked to start to learn new things they can be very resisting.
On the other hand she might have been an absolute angel.
I will never know as I declined the offer.

My 37 year old....we just clicked but I had no money....her owner said to give her £250 for her stuff which was 4 months old GFS saddle and bridle, spare bridle, 3 feed bins with 3 bags of bluechip, chaff and beetpulp, grooming kit, 4 brand new turnout rugs, 2 stable rugs, headcollar, leadropes, full fly kit....you get the idea!! And I could have the mare.....

My last ex racer; came to me for reschooling and to sell on....we 'clicked' too....

my current ex racer was signed over to me in a poor state....

In fact, the most expensive horse I've ever bought is my shettie, he was £280!

as a teenager i was given an ex circus pony from yasmin smarts circus, he was a sod in every way but such a character! he taught me how to stay on a horse, bucking rearing and spinning in one go when all four feet touched the floor he would take off! we had years of fun though, in the end i gave him to a family that had him on loan, watching blue peter one day i heard a neigh... there was tommy, he spent his last days at the home of rest for horses.
