I've had a threat of being reported when I had an elderly mare on loan who spent a lot of her day asleep under an oak tree.

We had a footpath running down the outside of the field which commuters used to get to the station and unfortunately the pony was often lying in the same place on the way to the station as she was when these people were on their way back.

They didn't seem to realise that in between she been up, grazed, fed, groomed!

Anyway, the owners of my field asked me to send the pony back to her owners as they were fed up with people knocking on their door threatening to call the RSPCA. I arranged for the poor girl to go back to her owners. The owners took her straight to the hunt and had her shot - they didn't want her back. If I'd known that I'd have found her another home or insisted that I keep her and I'd invite the RSPCA round to inspect!

I was gutted.

This is a very interesting post. In the summer last year I got a phone call, not from the SSPCA but from the ILPH saying they'd had an "anonymous" report about my horse being obese and that the inspector had been to look at him and was I aware that he was "dangerously overweight and I (was) killing him". Those were his exact words. He also told me if I didn't do something about it before he was back from his holidays 2 weeks later then he would have my horse taken off of me by the SSPCA.

This was him taken a week after the report was made.

Now when I phoned back, after calming myself down (I was absolutely hysterical and had to walk out of work because I couldn't stop crying, I was just terrified that my baby would be taken away) I asked if I could speak to someone to make a complaint and was given an email address to which I sent a very long letter explaining that my horse was already under vet's advice about his weight and that was why I was taking him in to stand all day and he was out at night, that we had found out who had reported me and it was a malicious call from an ex-friend who had admitted to another friend that she did it, and that I was very unhappy in the way I was spoken to when I received the initial phonecall and was also very upset at the way the inspector went up without anyone who even knew my horse present on the yard.

I also asked if the inspector was actually aware of my horse's breed (Welsh Section D), age and medical conditions before he had made such a snap judgement and called me to tell me I was murdering my horse.

All I was got was a VERY patronising phonecall from the inspector's supervisor, asking me if I knew what laminitis was (I explained that I had written a 10,000 word honours thesis on the subject and have worked with horses for over 20 years, but that didn't stop him explaining it all over again) and telling me he's sure his inspector wouldn't have said those things unless there was genuine reason for concern. He also assured me that they knew which horse was mine as they had been told he was the "brown one" - there are several in that field.

At the end of the phonecall he said "I hope this hasn't affected your trust of the ILPH and I hope you will support our work in the future". I'm sad to say that it really did shake my trust in charities such as this. I am all for helping animals in need, and when that need is genuine I think they do amazing work for animal welfare. But from my past experience, they seem less interested in the real cases and more set on scaring the sh*t out of hard working and genuine horse owners like myself.

Someone at a yard near me got reported because they were riding their 2yo and he was very immature for his age aswel, looked like a yearling! They sold it after this! THANK GOD! Then went and brought an older horse to ride, at least they hopefully learnt what is right and what is wrong.

They should have reported half the racing yards in the country then!

Yep i dont agree iwth racing 2yos either but this was a 2yo welsh pony sec B i believe having full grown adults on it!

I've been reported twice - once for my dog because he has a canine version of anorexia and is very skinny and once when I first got my mare. She was a rescue and very skinny, covered with lice and missing chunks of hair. I'd only had her a day and had the receipt to prove it, plus I'd already had the vet out twice to see her in that time s they were lovely about it and gave me loads of tips. The inspector even gave me his number so I could call him for advice

Yes, for blinding the horses... with fly masks... eye roll.... Now we have a little sign up to explain ourselves.

I laughed. SO funny that you have to have a sign up!
Brilliant.

I was working upstairs and hadn't got a clue why I was greeted by an RSPCA inspector who subsequently agreed that it was a waste of his time and money for petrol but they have to come. We'd been reported because my dog was 'in danger of jumping out of the window into the garden and killing himself in the process'. Stupid neighbour (whoever you are). Also he is giant weimeraner so he wouldn't have jumped as he could have stepped out if he'd wanted to!

The other time happened when another RSPCA inspector visited next door about their rabbit and saw my two dogs lying in their area whilst we were out for the day. Although we had arranged for friends to let them out every two hours- which they had done - he was worried they'd been abandoned so left an urgent message for us to contact him upon our return. When we did this the next day, he wasn't there and took 7 hours to ring us back. So much for 'being very concerned about this urgent situation!'

I am actually shocked at how many people have been reported!

Do some people not have any common sense, or are so vindictive that they report people for such petty things? Especially when you hear so many stories about actual abuse cases being ignored by the RSPCA inspectors.
Its a strange world we live in!

Never been reported but I have reported someone.

I had a fab little pony called Tiny Tim when I was younger, when I outgrew him I sold him to a young girl who kept him at the same yard.
I moved away but when I was back in the area visiting I decided to go and see Timmy. I wasn't expecting the state of him, he was thin, really nervous and lived loose in the yard with just an old barn for shelter that was full of old washing machines and general junk. There was a 1/4 full bucket of dirty water which looked like it hadn't been topped up for ages and no hay or anything.
What was a nice little DIY yard was full of farm equipment and machinery and totally empty apart from this poor little pony.
I was so upset I was crying and when I got home I phoned the RSPCA.

They were a bit patronising to say the least but did send an inspector round who said he was fine and there was nothing to worry about!

I heard that Timmy had been put down not long after
