I thought this would be an interesting topic to see what people would have to say. Everybody has always had an image of their dream horse built into their heads since a young age, mine being a 16-17hh ISH dapple grey . So I was wondering, have you ever bought a horse even slightly over the fact that they were pretty? I know a few people who have actually admitted that they chose their current horse because it was prettier then the other considerate candidates!

To be honest as silly as it sounds, when the time comes for me to be able to buy one, I don't think I'd have control to not buy a grey :o I'd probably go looking for months and months for the perfect horse for me! I know it sounds silly but if I'm spending that amount of money then I might as well buy something I like! But saying that, I wouldn't buy a horse because it's pretty even though it's too much horse for me.

Yeah me.
I choose my horse because I loved his pretty little face over the door the first time I met him! He's a great horse though, beautiful inside and out. He's a gorgeous burnished gold colour, TB with a cute warmblood looking face with wide set eyes and a narrow muzzle.
My last horse was also very attractive, a picture perfect petite dapple grey TB and the one before that was also stunning, an elegant part bred arab with a dished face.

I like pretty, fine throughbred types, not too fussed on colour.

Sometimes I look at my horse when I go to catch him in the field and I think he's just beautiful, even down to his perfectly formed, hollywood style white blaze :).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but of course we are going to be drawn to horses we find attractive. I wouldn't have married my husband if I thought he was ugly ;).
Saying that I do think a good horse is a good horse regardless of looks and I do like all types of horses even if I think they aren't as pretty as mine ;).

Yes:) The majority of them actually.

My own riding horses not so much, as long as they do the job.

Breeding stock absolutely I do, I want a specific colour and shape.

I buy and sell quite a lot of horses. I know what moves on the market, so it doesn't make sense for me to buy a solid bay/chestnut with no white if it is going to be in my paddocks for months. I buy what sells, I would be stupid not to, pretty colours - palominos, buckskins, creams etc, most overos, tobianos not so much, greys and whites are not so popular either, spotteds, and good strong bays or chestnuts with lots and lots of white. Pretty/handsome heads that fit the rest of the horse go without saying.

I have. The moment I saw his pic in the ad I knew I had to have him and he didn't disappoint when I saw his beautiful head over the door! I was looking for a young competition horse, which is exactly what he is and very forward going and generally full of beans which I think is great ;). Love him to bits.

Yes, both horses look lovely horse I bought last year there wad just something about her head picture went antntried her andbwrote cheque out nevervregretted owing her.

Yes, soon as I saw mine I knew I wanted him. He's a 16.2 friesian and absolutely beautiful :-) Not what I set out looking for though, I liked tb/wb type of build.

I bought the latest one completely on looks colour and because her description was what I wanted too. All my childhood I wanted a golden palomino and now I have one. :D

I am sorry to say that I definitely would never buy and ugly horse so yes looks are important to me. I fell in love with my new mare from her photo and she has in no way disappointed me so far!

I would buy a black beauty in a heartbeat! I think there can be a real price hike on palominos etc, but I am not too proud to say I'd love one! My horsey friend really scolded me for saying I don't really like heavy piebald cobs when discussing my horse search the other day, like I was the most shallow person in the world! Just because I admit it!

Yes. I wasn't properly looking, hadn't ridden for 5 years & had no livery arranged when I went to see some unbroken 3/4yos from a stud dispersal. Came away the owner of a stunningly beautiful 4yo chestnut mare. The old bat is now 31 & somewhat less beautifull to look at but I still love her.

Well, am currently loaning a spotty and have to admit that the spottiness was a huge factor in my interest, i like unusual looking horses, probably means that i am a bit shallow:)

I'm not shallow I just have good taste :D

"ooh that's a fine handsome horse!" says I.

"he's for sale if you're interested" says yer man who owns him.

I wasn't looking for a horse at the time, so I said "nah you're alright I was only looking"

Being a woman I heard the word "sale", you know how it is, you loose the run of yourself, and he was only gorgeous. Well, now he's mine, he's a pure sweetheart ♥

Oh yes.

I bought my current horse.....dapple grey arab, black mane and tail.... purely on his looks.....shallow muchly:o

He was a total loono when I bought him but almost 2 years later he's growing up into a very special horse and I love him to bits:)

I think my new boy is stunning and that's one reason why I bought him. However - part of what makes him so gorgeous is his friendly expression and lovely kind eye so it is more of a case of being beautiful on the inside and it showing on the outside!

I bought my Andalusian coz I fell for the cheeky swine as he galloped round the field tossing his head around looking like he hadnt a care in the world.

It was the best decision I ever made. Still got him almost 7 years later. He is my ultimate black beauty horse only he's bay!

yes I'm shallow too!

Yes, all of them.

I will even go as far to say that ive bought a horse knowing it wasnt really ideal for me BECAUSE it was so attractive (In my eyes)
I love a certain type of coloured and i have 3 of them now.. the last two were not suitable really and ive had to work hard to make them suitable but i cant fault how they have turned out. One is a total darling now after 4 years and hes worth his weight in gold.
Im still learning with the new one, shes very sharp, very hot headed, totally bonkers in some situations and against everything i needed as a less than confident rider in my own ability who was scared of falling off too much. However, a number of falls later, black eyes, bruised noses, fat lips and scratches galore shes turned me into someone who clock watches until i finish work each day to do it all again.

-BTW: i LOVE Palaminos and that will be my next venture :D

We bought Donovan at The Fayre oaks Sale in Wales, amidst hundreds of ponies. I never understood when people say they just saw their horse and they just knew, until i saw Donovan. there was just something about him that kept drawing us back to him, so yes, i guess I did buy because of his looks.:D

I buy what sells, I would be stupid not to, pretty colours - palominos, buckskins, creams etc, most overos, tobianos not so much, greys and whites are not so popular either, spotteds, and good strong bays or chestnuts with lots and lots of white. Feel free to send me over any lovely dapple greys Enfys ;)

FfionWinnie you really do know how to pick them! It's funny, I always see American's riding 16hh Buckskins or true Golden Palominos however they're basically unheard of over here in Ireland (I don't know about the UK). But a 16hh ish buckskin would have my knees wobbling

I chose to go and see Alf based on him ticking all my boxes, and fell in love with the way he looked, and his lovely temperament. I like big, strongly built horses with a bit of quality about them, and he is exactly that. I would still have had him if he was ugly though - so I guess that ability to do a job is my motivator.

I have, yes! I dont care if people think its shallow, its me that has to look at it every day and Id rather have one I like the look of than not.

Am smiling to myself here, as Im the person that likes a strong plain coloured horse with minimal white, and strongly dislike many of what people are calling 'pretty/unusual' colours on this thread :D
Just goes to show theres something for everyone doesnt it :)

(eta also I show, so looks are pretty relevant)

i love her because we are good together and i love the way he moves and she loves how i ride but it helps alot that she is gorgouse and ive had a lot of horses ive got on with but none quite so sexy

I think everyone who has a horse buys or has the intention of buying a horse they like the look of! No one thinks to themselves "oh what an ugly horse, I think I'll have him!"

When browsing I only click on the horses I like the look of, which is probably the same for the majority of people, or it would take us forever looking at every single ad!

No she doesn't look anything like what we were looking for. But it helps that she is very pretty, despite being a "boring bay" with no white......

Oh well I'm glad a bought a boring bay with no white everytime I see people washing tails and chalking white socks etc. So easy to keep clean when they are already mud/poo coloured!
