Have you ever bought a horse because of it's looks?

I think everyone who has a horse buys or has the intention of buying a horse they like the look of! No one thinks to themselves "oh what an ugly horse, I think I'll have him!"

^^^^ this.

There's got to be something physical to attract you in the first place unless it's one you've ridden and fallen in love with over time and you decide to buy because everything else, but the fugly beast's looks, is perfect. Bit like blokes really :D

Since beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, and most owners are biased towards their horses, I would say that almost every private owner buys a horse they think is beautiful.

Fwiw, I think my cream/grey duns are to die for, but wouldn't have a palo if you paid me, they do absolutely nothing for me. Equally, I don't much like coloured cobs, but I think my old lad is handsome despite being just that.

To me, Fergie's face is pure perfection in refined beauty. To you, he may be a bog pony, but that doesn't detract from my belief that he's perfect.

Oh yes.

I bought my current horse.....dapple grey arab, black mane and tail.... purely on his looks.....shallow muchly:o

We need to see pictures, he sounds incredible!!

No one thinks to themselves "oh what an ugly horse, I think I'll have him!"

This made me smile :)

I definitely bought my fella on looks, or at the time what I knew he could look like with a bit of TLC and some flippin good shampoo! I had always dreamed of having my own black beauty/ Lloyds TSB horse... But Friesians were out of my price range so instead planned to settle for a pretty little Fell, thinking this wouldn't be for years and years. Anyway, circumstances with my loan TB changed, and I started looking for a horse to bring on and call my own. A friend of mine stumbled across my new boy on a facebook page and I will be forever grateful that she did. He was cheaper than any Fell I would want and a fraction of the price of a registered Friesian. But he's priceless all the same.

I now have my very own Black Beauty, and still can't believe I own my horse of a lifetime at only 20 :')

I am not saying I would not but in practice I have not bought on looks so far. I have normally bought on the basis of it is the right gender, the right height and age, I can afford it and it is not too far away. I am not fussy enough really!

Yes - Fabio! I was looking for an 8-9 year old gelding who'd done a bit of everything. I seen Fab's ad and ended up with a just 4 year yr old who'd been broken and turned away for a couple of months. I'd always wanted a palomino and loved him when we went to view. I look back and wonder what the hell i was thinking as he looked very babyish still and i've had to teach him everything. I fell lucky though as had hardly any issues with him at all, has been a very straightforward horse and has a super temperament. I don't think i'd be as silly as to buy a horse that way again though as i know i could have had a lot of problems. But lucky for me i was a bit naive and ended up with him. :)

I must admit that I did buy my youngster because of his looks and colour, I will only buy a horse which stands out from the crowd however this doesn't always mean that it has to be big or flashy, some horses just have a wonderful commanding presence about them.
I judge potential horses by if I was walking them through a busy showground would they turn heads, needless to say my current boy does!
You either love him or hate him, I think that his cream coat and pale green/blue eyes are to die for, not to mention that he looks like a chess piece! :D

I bought both my girls because I thought they were gorgeous. The fact they were both feral and I couldn't get near them was a bonus! Thefirst marewas the first, and only one I looked at, the second one I wasn't even looking!

the horses or ponies i have bought have been because i like their looks as well as their temperament, when we bought my daughters foal it was purely on looks, he's still a pretty boy 5 years on but is sharper than i would have prefered.
the 2 horses i was gifted are as different as chalk and cheese lol, gelding is a gorgeous chestnut twit, everybody loves him because he is gentle and gives the nicest cuddles, big girl is not pretty, I'm not sure i would have bought her :o she's not ugly, more workmanlike really. but i love her and wouldn't change :p

Yes - I look for half decent conformation. However there is no point buying the most beautiful horse in the whole of christendom when its so damned moody you can barely do anything with it. It has to look nice and be a nice person too

Gawd yes. How on earth I thought i could cope with an unbroken 3 year old I don't know, but he was so beautiful I couldn't think about anything else for 2 months after I saw his advert.

All mine are PRE (Andalusian), or PREx, and beautiful. I wouldn't buy an ugly horse, but, as I breed, I probably wouldn't be able to sell it's offspring if I did!
I prefer horses with no white markings at all and I love greys, but, I've seen fantastic looking horses of all colours, even Piebald and Skewbald, which I'm not at all keen on.

TBH, if I didn't like their conformation to start with I wouldn't even bother looking any further, that has to be right first.
You should always breed from the best you can find, no point doing it otherwise you only end up with sub standard stock which are no use to anyone if they're always breaking due to bad conformation.

My horse's advert only had a front on shot (why would you do this in an advert?) so I went to see her because I liked the description. And she was pretty and friendly. So that was a win. A horse has to be both. It also has to have a good conformation, which for me is the same as being pretty, although I know that's not true for everyone. I've known a lot of folk who have bought a horse because it was pretty, but then found out they couldn't handle it worth beans.

I went out looking for a solid colour 16hh - 16.2hh 5 year old ISH or WB...I bought a chesnut 5 yr old 16.1hh ISH x WB...the fact he is stunning was a happy coincidence ;)

Since beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, and most owners are biased towards their horses, I would say that almost every private owner buys a horse they think is beautiful.

The exception being Jesstickle and all the mean things that she says about poor BH

I think all my horses are exceptionally good looking. :) However I bought them after riding them, not on looks alone. My dun boy in particular I think people must think I paid for his colour, but actually it was because he was the first horse to really make me grin ear to ear since retiring my grey girl.

Having been horse shopping recently I've seen a couple that were stunning to look at, but as soon as I started to ride them I knew they weren't for me. The lastest purchase is a very good looking black horse, who even a well known eventer has called 'classy', but the reason we bought her was because my Mother felt so happy on her :) That said, I wouldn't have gone to view her if I thought that she was ugly :o I like my horses to be (IMO) good looking :)

I always say I don't care what the horse looks like when I'm going to view horses but the ones I've bought have always been the ones that give you a little wow when you look at them.
