I've been meaning to do this for ages and finally went round in the car today following my usual exercise route:-

From Yard
0.4 miles: walking on road
0.6 miles: trotting on road up hill to cattle grid.
0.5 miles: trotting across the moor on the flat.
0.4 miles: cantering across the moor uphill, flat and slightly down again
0.2 miles: walk across moor downhill.
0.2 miles: final canter across moor uphill to cattle grid.
0.6 miles: walk downhill on road
0.2 miles: trot uphill.
0.1 miles: walk up drive back to yard.

Total 3.2 miles. Approx 25 mins depending on the going.

This is one of my shorter routes but probably most frequently done - obviously as we ride on open moor I can vary my rides a lot but do like to do some roadwork. I ride and lead every morning my two mares, they are both schooled for an hour once a week and hunted about once a week/fortnight (less in the shooting season bearing in mind our hunting season is from 1st Aug to 30th April). This seems to keep them fit (and the dogs!!).

I am surprised that this route is only 3 miles I thought it was longer.

How does this compare to your daily exercise?

Hmm, can see I am going to have to practice ride and lead!! Mine would never canter together!
Did you have to practice lots or were they good from the beginning?

Both good as gold whichever you ride and lead, lead horse goes out in a headcollar - its the gates that take a bit of practise especially if you are leading 2! I also take them to the 100 acre field for a good gallop but have to remember to keep the lead horse on the inside so that she doesn't push me into the hedge!

Ride and lead is fun, but mine aren't too well paced, one is faster than the other at walk and trot and the one i lead is faster in canter, making that harder!!! lol

Actually I don't know will drive the car round the route tonight! we do 20minutes cantersize round the field and then back to the yard, usually ride and lead up to 4, my ride horses are very well behaved though, the horses to my right are my responsibility and the horses to the left my ride horse deals with. Obviously taking this amount out I have to know they are pretty well used to it by then. Each of them get a rota of who is ridden and who is led to keep the exercise even throughout the week.

I have been meaning to do this.
There is one ride I do quite regularly as it is all hills. I ride it and I also walk it with the pram. When I walk it I really feel it!! A great fitness walk/ride.
It wouldn't take me 5 mins to drive it.

I rarely go on the exact same ride so not too sure. I usually go for about 2 miles I think, unless I'm feeling energetic, then it usually about 6 miles.
