Have you ever had a rotational fall? Plus question..

Ive had one proper one at a hanging log/drop XC schooling - i broke my leg horse broke her back and was PTS. NOt sure what happend TBH but wasnt nice to be on the floor and see a ton of horse coming towards you i was lucky it was just my leg

I had a rotational fall about 4 years ago. Horse was very experienced (16yr old, very well hunted, evented up to intermediate) but I was very stupid and decided to jump unsecured haylage bales in a field. The horse hit the bale with his front legs and then the bale rolled over with the horse on top. He landed across my legs and luckily the bale missed me and continued rolling across the field. The horse was completely unhurt and I had just a broken collar bone.

I'd say the main reason the horse went fully rotational was because the obstacle was unsecured.

Never had one, thank god. All these sound horrific

ive had one but it was showjumping not x country!
was on a connemara that could jump out of its skin but got a bit cocky, was only small (about 85cm) going into a double at home. came round the corner and went, but unfortunatly i was not adamant enough in saying no and she took a stride out, didnt make it and hit the front rail. we fell before the fence did but luckily i was thrown clear of her in true nose dive fashion and she landed on head/neck and rolled over missing me by inches. i was a lucky on and escaped with only a few cuts and bruises and a bit shaken, got staright back on and jumped a course (think if i hadnt i wouldnt of wanted to jump again ever!) but i make sure now im always adamant enough to say no your waiting for me. lol

I've had 2 but wouldnt say either were serious...
First one was when I was about 9 and jumping bales on my 12hh...he tried to brush through one going downhill and we both just tipped over. Neither of us hurt apart from a very bruised bottom!!
2nd one was when I first got Finn. We were at an event that was well out of our comfort zone on very wet ground (late Oct. iirc) without studs. Pone thought about stopping , then decided to go. We just flipped over...He was a little stiff for a few days and I was thrown clear.

I have had one and there was no jumping involved ! I was cantering fast on a sand path and going around a 90 degree turn to the right my horse put his foot in a mole hole and somersaulted over his own leading foreleg. I shot over his shoulder and landed on my head slowly (it seemed at the time !) rotatating over on to my back. I had all the ligaments around my right collar bone torn away from the bones. It was very painful for a very long time afterwards. Horse was absolutely fine.

The cause was obvious, going too fast on unsuitable terrain, (has made me think about going at speed on the sand trails since - I only canter and gallop on the beach now.

As well as a couple of others my memorable rotational fall seemed to be down to the ground. Out hunting, a take off was covered in leaves etc and me nor the horse realised there was a foot of claggy mud beneath it. Horrible feeling - the impulsion to get over the jump is there but the legs don't match! I broke my shoulder and collar bone where the horse landed on me. I count myself very lucky to get away with only a metal collar bone and a clicky shoulder blade!

Oh i've just remembered another which was definitely the horses fault. Stupid git decided that a pheasant was worth goggling at and ran right into a 3ft log. It really was a useless horse. I believe he was sold on to someone in England as a 'safe, experienced Irish hunter'

(not by me!)

Hi, all friends,
What horrific experiences we all share, but it can only be good that we share them all, + learn from them all.

Thanks, Starbucks, friend, for this topic. I'm sure loads of other friends will be reading it, while not all are quite ready to comment.
