i have a very sweet 5 year old golden lab. i had a black 1 before him and he was ur typical lab food obsessed, fairly clever and quite protective in his home environment (not at all vicious but would bark at strangers who walked past the gate and came to the door etc) ...

... however woody (the golden lab in question) will turn his nose up at anything, i have to change his food about every week as he quite literally just goes of it and will refuse to eat and as for his intellagance ... he cant even do sit

wow proper gundogs! unfortunatly woody would b a hopeless gun dog he has a fear of blackbirds let alone any pheasants or anything else he would have to pick up! this adds to his fear of lettuce, metal sticks, stones near drains, mice (dead, alive or fake!) cats (yes really!) gas heaters, horses, the list is endless!

Labs used to be your average 'hoover' of a dog. There is a theory (just don't shoot the messanger here!) that incorrect breeding is creating dogs that aren't true to the breed, ie voracious, soft mouthed, working type of dogs.

Just a point, but a nutritionalist will tell you if your dog doesn't eat, take the food away after 20 minutes, and offer it again at the next meal. Most dogs will stick this out for up to five days, and will then stop being fussy and turn rather grateful! Obviously, if he isn't eating, he shouldn't be getting any treats!

totally agree he was bred (not by me) as a show dog rather than a traditional gun dog! ... as for treats he turns his nose up 2 most of them aswell!

My lab is a nightmare to feed - he is so fussy that the vet has diagnosed him with a type of canine anorexia!!! He is always skinny though the vet has said he is in the correct weight range for his size it's just people are used to seeing chubby labs. I had him allergy tested and he's missing an enzyme in his stomach which means he can't have dairy or meat tho he can cope with chicken and turkey.

Our black lab bitch was very fussy about her food and would go off stuff until we got her spayed. After that she had a much healthier appetite. Last year she spent three weeks at AHT in Newmarket following an op and she was put on a starvation diet. When she came back she would eat her dinner then pick up the bowl our GSD was eating from and walk off and eat that too. Took us a few days to catch her at it !!
