attack your horse?

Bearing in mind I've had my mare for 13yrs, my gelding for 2yrs, I've never (until now) seen such a thing.

Got to the yard yesterday morning, the gelding was having a morning nap and my mare was keeping guard, albeit not that well!! as I walked over there was a crow behind him, that kept flapping up and pecking him! he didn't move just put his ears back each time! I was worried he'd cut himself and was being eaten alive (yes I'm a drama queen) but all was well, the crow flew off a I got closer and my boy was fine!

but has anyone else seen him? Is it coz he's bay, maybe the crow thought he was a giant poo?

We have 2 crows that attack the mirrors in the arena! They tend not to bother with the horses but sometimes get so mad with the mirrors they will swoop after the horses! Needless to say it makes my horse go forwards ;)

I've never seen one attack my horses but they do pull the hair off their backs this time of year. They even land on the ponies backs to do it. The birds around here will have lovely soft nests lined with horse hair. :)

The crow will be trying to find any loose hair to pluck out of your horse for their nest.

Birds LOVE my shetlands! The swallows nests are always full of hair but it's quite funny they don't mix and match colour, each nest is only ever lined with one type.

Oh clava, I've been trying to get those pictures for two years or more. You're pony is loving it!

That was last year, this year I clipped him late so the crows have had to make do with the haffies (so plenty to go round)

No ... But the pics of the pony with crows on his back looks very like the deer in a local NT park, where I regularly walk my dog. They often have crows on their backs picking off loose hair and, I suspect, ticks as well. I don't think your boy was being attacked OP, I think the crows were looking for nesting material. The deer seem to like it as well. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. It's the nesting season and anything hairy is fair game for these resourceful birds.

Crows and magpies are currently sitting on Kal's fieldmate Rog's back regularly at the moment . . . it's amazing/lovely to see . . . there are also lots of Rog patches in the field where he has rolled to get rid of his (very thick - he is a shettie type) winter coat, so I feel they are doing him a service.

I have put two photos in my profile, of Jackdaws helping themselves to nesting material. they were even queuing up.
I will try and upload them if I can remember how.

Crows mob me when I am out for a walk with my dogs, I made the mistake of giving one a home made dog treat once and now I have anything between 20 and 70 approx appear next to me, so many it's a standing joke now if you need to find me look for the carrion crows. They are quite daring and have even brushed the tips of their wings across my hat as they fly past so plucking hair from horses should pose no fear for them. They challenge (and win) my dogs for their treats when I throw treats to the dogs, much to the dogs disgust!
When I have been out on site flocking saddles and have dropped some flock the birds come down and grab it for their nest lining.

They do this with my lads as well. When grooming my ID who casts a lot, have collected the hair and put in a nut feeder about this time of year and the birds certainly kept emptying very regularly
