And what were your reasons for doing so?

I have had to steal hay/feed FROM YO who was starving my horse (his ribs and hips were sticking out) have now left that yard. Also had to steal bedding as he was standing on concrete..not nice. All this and she is buying herself £12k showjumpers! 3 of them!

Poll for anonnymous answers!

I'd never steal anything...and have always handed back money when overpaid or whatever.
But then, I'm not about money.

Under normal circumstances I have always got plenty of feed in stock, but on the odd occasion I have run out, I have stolen from other liveries, but owned up and returned it straight away. Suppose that is more like 'borrowing' than pinching.

No, if I have ever needed hay and been too late to get into the barn I borrow a bale from a friend who does not mind and replace it. If I cannot get the person on the phone I leave a note so they know its me, it works both ways as they do the same if they run out.

If my YO was starving my horse I would BUY him feed and then knock the cost off the livery bill. Also I wouldn't let it get to the stage where his ribs and hips were sticking out before acting. IMO that is not stealing fed it is taking what you have paid for

I did buy him feed and she went mad at me saying I didnt know what I was talking about...the horse was on livery with her and she was therefore incharge of his weight...she also stopped turning him out alltogether (was a complete nutter)

Oh and refused to give him any....

As for the rib/hip stickingout, dont think I didnt mention it - why do you think I left?!!!!!

When I bought my first horse, I kept her at the yard where she was already stabled and it was great but changed hands...... New manager started cutting back on hay (which I was assured was ad lib) and cutting back on feed. It was in Berkshire and I was paying through the nose for part livery (as were all of us). So as yard manager used to leave before me I used to top up my horses evening and night time hay - yes I did confront her face to face - no it didn't do any good - yes I did then decide to move her but in the meanwhile certainly didn't feel guilty as I was only feeding her what her body weight etc required. I occasionally borrow my neighbours feed when I run out and she does the same but we always replace it, even if it's just the odd scoop, we class that as "borrowing"......

i'd have gone to specsavers, as my eyesight wasn't the best and obviously blocking out the "ribs and hips" during the previous 4 months it took for horse to drop weight....

Never if I have run short of anything I would always ask someone if I could have a scoop of ??? as I have been on the recieving end of a feed/bucket/hay thief and its just downright rude and not very nice..so no never

no, if i was desperate for something i would ring the person or text them to make sure it was ok before hand and then replace, borrow yes steal no no

my hay used to disappear at the old yard, but I would never take anyone elses without asking. My new yard is lovely all hay, straw, and feed (except supplements) is included, and when I asked if it was ok if I put some extra hay/straw in for George the YO said 'you don't have to ask that's what it's there for' - it's such a relief to discover that George still has a bit of hay in his net in the morning.

Never stolen feed (or even 'borrowed') but then horse is on full livery at a place I trust.

He did drop weight during the stud season, and he's a tricky horse to feed cos he's quite hyper and even supposedly non-heating feed makes this worse. He also gallops about instead of grazing, and chucks hay around instead of eating it. But the stud manager is great and is even feeding him 3 different types of hay every day, to tempt him to eat more, which seems to be helping.

I just wouldn't keep my horse somewhere where he was dropping weight and I suspected they were not feeding him properly. But I'm not going to jump on you cos I don't know the full story - I'm sure there were reasons why it took you a while to realize this, especially if you trusted the YO.

Never have, and wouldn't expect anyone to steal from me, but i know someone did on a yard i used to be on. She took from all of us, so we all put F*ck off buy your own notes in our bins. She soon stopped!!
If i ever ran out of feed i would ask before i took from anyone. I try to make sure i never run out anyway

hUH?

Having had lots of feed stolen in the past - (On one particular yard YO basically fed her own horse entirely from my supply) - I can say that apart from the fact such theft is deplorable; it is also incredibly inconvenient to drive all the way to the yard, discover you don't have enough feed to cover yourself and have to frantically rush to the feed merchants.

Even if I were to borrow even a scoop of someone's feed, I would never dream of taking it without phoning or texting the owner first.

Absolutely not, and I never would. If I were really desperate I would beg or borrow, but never steal.

Yep, i used to nick a girls feed at my old yard all the time, her parents paid for everything and they were minted whereas i was just about affording everything, nope i didnt feel guilty and yep i probably would do it again and yes my pony loved the apple chaff!

Stealing is stealing, whether you think the people you are stealing from can afford it or not. It isn't so much the money, but the inconvenience of turning up on the yard assuming that you had sufficient feed for that evening only to discover that some idiot had stolen some of it and you don't have enough for your own horse.

I've had to borrow feed (arriving back from a few days away during Christmas to find no chaff left and no feed merchants open), but have always asked and returned what I have used. No one steals my feed because I keep my feed bin locked. I had an occasion when someone was taking my Cortaflex, but a good padlock stopped that.

For someone so hard up, you do seem to have an extremely well developed sense of entitlement.

ive sometimes had to swipe a bale of hay or shavings when YO hasnt got the weeks worth in! i just leave a note in the book saying that i have taken it as i dont always know who i have taken it from! it is then replaced when the supplies turn up

I never had. Wouldn't dream of it. However I moved yard a year ago and all of sudden I went from a bag of feed a week to one a month. Hmmn..... and I was accused of stealing when I left!

I have occasionally stolen a scoop if ive run out! but only from a freind and i then tell them and replace it.
But i also dont mind if one of my friends say 'oh, hope you dont mind i grabbed a scoop/section/dollop of xxxxx last night, ive run out'
i know they wont take the pee and neither would i
