Have you had any luck with steroid inject in the coffin joints?

Short term fix, once horse started longer hacks/trotting a few weeks later went lame again. Taking shoes off was a long term fix

Had it done once, didn't really help, horse went on to danilon and natural balance shoes and happily worked for six years. Did try barefoot but didn't suit him. He is now semi retired, happy as Larry , still on danilon , with turmeric added in. Seems to work for us.

never went sound on it. Tried twice, and took shoes off and tried him barefoot for the rest of his life. But only suitable to retire as a field companion for the remaining 15 years of his life.

Yup, done once with HA and steroid in to one coffin joint at age 5 (maybe 6 cant remember now) then natural balance shoes. Hacked out for some time afterwards then after 6 months started school work and jumping and remained sound until I lost him at age 13 to colic.

Mine was done mid November with a short term steroid as a trial to see if we could ease the navicular bursitis that was impeding healing of the tear on his DDFT. We worked on the basis he had blocked almost sound at the coffin joint when we did the initial lameness work up.
He was almost sound again 2 weeks later so we decided to re medicate a fortnight later and add in some HA. At the same time his shoes came off to start barefoot rehab and he started on green lipped mussel as an extra supplement.
So far all good although in the long term the barefoot will most probably have the biggest role in his long term soundness as the steroids are really only a short term helper for his issue.
He's on restricted in hand walking at the moment but did survive an unplanned 2 mile gallop after he floored me and escaped a few weeks ago (feeling a little too good).

I have been thinking about this also for one of mine and it got me to looking at new supplements also. He is barefoot and this has definitely helped but he is still slightly lame, so was thinking to try a joint injection as well as a new supplement. I have just written a blog on it here, but still looking as to where to get the best quality supplement - am trying to order straight from NZ at the moment, we shall see. http://www.ponypatters.com/blog

Yonks ago (prob 14yrs) my mare had this, lasted about 3 weeks before the lameness came back. She was then retired, still around now age 27!!

My veteran has had his done 3 times over the last few years. Worked well and lasted approx 18 month to 2 year before needing to be done again. Won't do them again as his ringbone has progressed too far now. He is now managed with Bute and remedial shoeing and is almost fully retired but happy x

Got six months from the first injection then three months from the next one. Stopped after that and went onto Danilon instead.

My friends horse had them about 2/3 years ago, came back into full work and stayed that way. Hunting weekly at the moment and just had vet check and still sound. Think she said they can be more effective for bone issues rather than soft tissue damage. My mare had more of a soft tissue issue, wasn't recommended, barefoot and time off is how I approached that. And fingers crossed it seems to be working.

Unfortunately they had no effect on my horses lameness. However, he is now kept sound with a combination of bar shoes and he's given boswellia as a supplement which is fantastic. He suffered from arthritis in his coffin joint.

Can someone please tell me about the balance shoes that have been mentioned in this thread? Never heard of them and I'd be interested to hear more.

Positive effect on my big lad was very short term. Took his shoes off in the hope he would become happy enough to be retired to the field. 18 months later he was so sound and well that he was brought back into work and ended up being able to hunt again before losing him prematurely to something unrelated.

Lasted about 6 weeks for mine before we went lame again so we didn't bother again. We now manage him with supplements (yumove and turmeric) and he feels better than he has for about 5 years. And he lives out.

Thank you everyone, it is a 'last chance' option, so I am going ahead but I feel slightly nervous that the odds aren't good. However, we shall see as it really is the only option before retirement (but I have just ordered some Maxaflex which I think is similar to Yumove?) and got the farrier to remove her shoes.
