Have you heard - hay stolen from field?

Couldn't believe it (well, perhaps I could) but a friend rang me this afternoon to say that her neighbours had had their fields of hay stolen. Apparently they were baled ready to get in, and when they went out in the morning to load them up, they were all gone. Someone had driven into their fields and loaded up a few hundred small bales of hay. I know we are desperate, but come on.......

By the way, she lives in Felixstowe. On a separate point, anyone know of any good quality hay for sale around Ely/Newmarket area. I was promised 1,000 bales from a supplier who has now let me down. Need to get about 1,500 bales (conventional small bales), so if anyone knows of any, do PM me please. Don't want them all at once, can take a few hundred now, and hope that if I pay a deposit, they will store for me.

yep we have had that round here, somerset. but we had alot of travelers around the area at the time aswell that didnt take to kindly to being turfed out of the field they were inhabiting.

Apparently it was happening round here. My hay man put a gate on his field and locked it, for that reason. Mine is all locked away, too.

Hey Penniless, my boss told me about this today, TBH am not that surprised. Our hay at the livery yard is going to be £6.50 this winter. There and at the stud we use Roly Fenwick (sp) over at Six Mile Bottom.

A friend of mine had his taken from the hay barn. They waited until after a delivery so either were staking the place out or had inside information, then waited until the place was empty and brought in an appropriate sized vehicle. He's beefed his security up considerably now but I couldn't believe it!

(What really burns me about stuff like this is you know it has to be horse people buying it. No sense of community. )

We kept our hay in our horse box - loaded the back up!
We had all but 2 bales in there - the 2 bales were in the barn. After ONE day, we had one left. And that's someone off our yard stealing it!!!!!!!
Sorry I can't help you with the search for hay, but stealing it is happening all over small and large scale

Tip I heard on the radio, altho not sure how practical if you have loads of bales, but if you have stored hay if you cut the baling twine then obviously it makes it harder or less attractive for thieving bar stewards to take it. Appreciate it also makes it harder if you want to move it but at least you might still be left with something!

We were also told of feed being stolen from yards (Leeds/Pudsey), 3 yards had feed bins emptied over a couple of days!

Looks like it could be an expensive winter!!

We keep our feed in the box now too after walking into the barn and finding someone with their buckets, digging into our feed from our bin!!

My friend has her horse in Pudsey, I'll let her know to watch out re the hard feed being stolen.

After reading this I think we will cut all the strings on our hay bales. Just not worth the risk otherwise.

If she asks at Pudsey Ag he will tell her exact yards. I'm thinking same about baler twine, was a brilliant idea so will do that when we finally get our small bales in!
