My vet came out recently to do my mares teeth and jabs, another livery at my yard asked me to get vet to look at some lumps on her horses back under the saddle. He said they were the result of using wormers like equest, equimax-the good ones that kill the worms that are cycling around the body aswell as the ones in the gut, whereas the others just do the ones in the gut. The lumps are the bodies immune response to the dead worm, it cannot be removed from the body so are just surrounded by fibre coating at remain there forever, but where there is friction-eg from a saddle there is a flamatory responce and lumps come up. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is it common? I know the lumps are harmless but a bit off putting! thanks

Frankly, I think he's bonkers. There are lots of reasons for lumps under the saddle - pressure necrosis, a bit of infection in the pores to name just two. But his explanation doesn't convince me at ALL.

V odd diagnosis. Can't see how it could be reached without biopsies etc. So very many reasons for lumps cannot see how, with this amount of info this can be conclusive....?

It never ceases to amaze me what strange diagnosis come out at times!!!!

It does make you wonder if standards aren't slipping a bit, or is it us owners are more informed!! Have had several instances recently where I have had to make the diagnosis, still got the full bill though!!!

On one occasion a livery's horse had colic and was still showing pain through enough drugs to make an Elephant happy, got the Vet to go through what it had had and had to take control and insist it went to horsepitol ASAP and not leave it for a while longer! Experienced vet operating told me I had saved a large part the horses gut, by getting it there so quick! It was as I suspected an Interssusception!

When i was at a saddle fitting clinic given by Ken Lyndon Dykes about 10 years ago this was mentioned as one of the causes of saddle lumps except Eqvalan was the wormer that was efficient enough to kill this stage of worm. There was a name for it but cant remember it.
