How the h*ll does a horse break its back in a flat race?
[/ QUOTE ]
By clipping heels with another (which looks to me like what happened in the film) - it usually causes them to fall, and he must have landed awkwardly?
Unless he broke it while running - in which case I have no idea!
To the person who said it was a shame it didn't land on the jockey - you are bloody ignorant, uninformed and have made me so angry. Imagine how you would feel if you took a fall that was completely not your fault and heard somebody say they wish you had been badly injured.
Would you care to enlighten us as to why you made this remark?

Goodness! Must have been something seriously amiss with that horse. Poor (but lucky) jockey, looks like he escaped with his life by a few inches.

agree with you tia...watched the video over and over and the horse gave no warning at all..ears pricked looked happy and just flipped over????very bizarre, most give at least an ear flick
Haven't (daren't) look at the vids but pretty sure it'll be one which was posted on here ages ago. Either vivhewe or vicijp knew the horse and did the history for us...........

It seemed to freak when he started to put his feet in the stirrups?

I watched it wondering if it was saddle related, but he appears to flip (literally!) as soon as the leader put pressure on his bridle. It looks like it may be a total over reaction to poll pressure. In fact, it looks like the horse is pulling back with all his might, expecting to meet resistance, and flips over when he meets none.
My horse Pink can a vaugley similar - she panics at unexpected pressure on her headcollar or bridle. All she does is pull back for a couple of seconds before she gets a grip on herself but is obviously way more severe.
I too think the comment about the jockey is pretty uncalled for. I believe it is because the poster is against horse racing which i don't really understand either as they seemed (in previous posts) to enjoy eventing, SJ etc so I don't see how racing is different?
Noone likes to see a horse injured and in general racehorses are treated very very well. Yes there are a few horror stories but then there is with any horse sport i think.
I do think the handlers/trainer etc were possibly a bit irresponsible trying to race a horse that had a habit of doing that though. I know jockeys take risks riding young animals but the fact they had the lunge line suggests that was 'safer' (for the handler I'm guessing) than them having a normal lead rope on it. That jockey was lucky to walk away. Bizarrely the horse didn't even look that disturbed after what it had done either! Def would say some serious psychological problem there.
That is so strange, as someone said above, it didnt look like a rear that over balanced. Extremely odd and it looked perfectly fine when it was standing there !
