Have you/Would you ever change a horses name?

Which of these make you a 'toff'?

I changed a 'Beauty' to 'Bertie', which I don't think was too bad a change as they sound similar.

I changed a 'Pip' to 'Karis', because this was back in the days before passports and the dealer called her 'Pip' - so it wasn't like it was her 'real' name. I never found out what that was.

i changed my previous horses name from Ziggy to Freya just because., i got to name V myself since i'v owned him from 2months old before he was just 'the foaly' x

only her competition name,

passport name - kerry
stable name - kezi

first yr i competed with kerry's promise (couldnt think of anything else!!)
now Killarney Kerry as wanted it to be more irish.

still along same lines so dont consider it bad luck

I changed a foals name, but he was from beaulieu road about 2 months previous and was none the wiser anyway!
his new owner changed his name again as his was too much of a mouthful!

I havent ( to my knowledge) changed ahorse's name. Having said that for most of mine i didnt ask if they had one!

My first pony did keep his original name, 2nd pony i forgot to ask but presumed her name was ruby(part of her showjumping name) so called her that. And the horses Ive had afterwards either werent named officially or i didnt ask about pet names.

And 2 I didnt actually give names to other than "the coloured pony" and "the Broadway horse", I didnt have them long enough!

Yep I changed Tia's. Her passport name is Toorafin Lady so her previous owners called her Lady (i'm guessing the dealer who brought her over from Ireland called her Lady too so they kept it). I hate the name so asked HHOers for T names and went with Tia Maria. Suits her much better!

I changed Ellie's name. When she came to me she was Chicka, and after my instructor instantly dubbed her Chicka Tikka Masala, I knew something had to change! I spent ages thinking up some stunning, posh name for her, but in the end it just came to me - so Miss Ellie she was!

Yes I have changed names and it certainly hasn’t been bad luck for me with my two!

Bodey was called Steve, now come on who calls a horse Steve!

Badger was called Lucas, just not cute enough for him!

Edited to say neither knew their names, Bodey was straight out of a field of Gypsy cobs, and Badger only spoke Norwegian anyway as he was imported by the dealer.

I changed out TB's name, he had come over from Ireland and the dealer called him Tiger, so he'd only had that name for a couple of weeks and his Weatherby's passport was blank - we called him Ben which really suits him.

Not fussed about names enough to change it

Have renamed some who didn't have a stable name and were only know my show names however. But that's more naming rather than renaming

Yes, my horses passport name is Blaengwen Simon Davies and came to me as Simon. We had just moved house to somewhere that I could keep a horse at home and can see him out of the window, we have a good friend called Simon and it was a bit odd to call Simon out of the bedroom window... became Dylan walking home after a night at the pub a few days later and it stuck.

Although he gets called alternative names on a regular basis

yes i have changed my horses name, she was called pink nose. no chance of me calling her in from the field with that!!! so i called her jazz

My Lad was called Roddy when I got him as a yearling, reg name is Boden park Roderic, a friend had just lost a yearlinfg called Roddy and it just seemed wrong, he didn't seem to know his name anyway so changed it to Faolan, which means Little Wolf, he is grey.

I did once - never again as it did bring me bad luck and the horse turned out to be a savage devil!!

Changed BJ to Banjo

Since then have stuck with all names and believe me there have been some pretty ridiculous ones!!

I haven't, as yet anyway! I had one called St Lawrences (naming the horse after the local mental hospital should have been a clue to me!), I was intending to change his name but he wasn't here long enough for me to worry about that, I soon found out the original name was appropriate!!

changed a lot of horse's names!

ones that spring to mind;

rhee to lotti
blue to alfie (he wasn't even grey!)
inch to BB

none of the horses have been more of less lucky than any others i have known/owned.

We had a skewbald pony called Apache XI. Renamed him Patrick, and for shows Just Patrick. He was so naughty, but I doubt that had more to do with my poor riding than a name change!

I've changed a couple. I don't consider it bad luck, just another old wives tale.

When we bought seren she had no name, she came from gypsies at auction.

All our other horses came with names and we kept them.
So technically never changed any of my horses names, I would change it, and think it must just be superstitious to think its bad luck, surely it cant make a difference can it?
