Have you/Would you ever change a horses name?

FB's real name is fine - unusual, easy to shorten and he's had it all his fourteen years.

Ari's registered name on his carta is Caramelo (Toffee), because he was chestnut when born. He's now a 16hh dapple grey with attitude so to call him something so sweet wasn't right, plus my friend's kids have a mare called Caramelo. So we shortened it to Ari, which really suits him.

I have never changed one of my own horse's names, never felt the need to. Most had nice names! Luca took a bit of getting used to but it does suit him so he is sticking with it, have had a few other people comment that they don't like this name and would change it but meh.

There was a horse who moved to where I work once called 'Oddbod!' poor horse!

He was a piebald so we changed it to Basset which is much better

I changed my boys name from Lucky Jim to Mister, he is very sweet.

I think the only reason the superstition may be valid is that the horse/ pony may no longer come to call!!!

QR my NF came without a name and with no history as an 8 yo so....besides some bizarre coincidence....she must've had a different name before. They had been calling her 'Dolly' at the dealers yard but I thought Molly was much more befitting.

Our Haffie came with the wrong passport....so we called her the name on the passport 'Merel', until we found out it was actually 'Meerle van Heindenheim'...we still call her Merel although I usually call her Mel anyway!

I changed a ponies name once, from Jamie (which sounded ridiculous) to Murphy which I thought sounded much better.
We also bought a horses from a dealer who cam ewith no name; so we named him Jasper

I would change a horse's name, I'm not at all superstitious. Scooby comes when he's called, so I wouldn't change his name (I don't think I can anyway, as I only loan him) even though I'm not keen on the name. I am going to show him under a different name though, because the show name on his passport is "My Fine Feathered Friend" and I don't like it.

I think I'll call him Checkmate for showing - much less of a mouthful.

Changed 3 of mine although kept registered names the same for 2.
Most recent one came as a ridiculously scrawny 3 year old, inappropriately named Butch! Quickly became know as bony pony so is now Bo! I just couldn't face the thought of shouting Butch across a field!

Decker was called happy when i got him which he is not at all, so that promptly got changed! and Tia was called Jubilee and it didnt suit her at all.

Yes I changed our pony's name from Biscuit to Wizzy, you could stand in the field shouting biscuit all day long and he wouldn't acknowledge you, however, within a day of changing his name to Wizzy he would charge over whinnying at you.
*Wizzy came about after watching him hooning around with his friends and me declaring that there is a wizzy little pony in that lazy exterior* It stuck with him!

Mine was registered on his passport as Billy and the dealer I got him from called him Charlie. Neither suited him so I called him Taffy which really suits him and is the only Welsh name that I like that I can pronounce!!

I changed Solo's when I got him- he was called Sebastien. He didn't know his name and I didn't want to be yelling that across a field!!

I had to change Merlin's name - I got him from a dealer who never told me what he was called before (pre passport days) so I had to pick a new name for him. He's never complained!

well I named Freckles and Harley... bought Freckles as a foal and bred Harley...
Ticky was called Boo by the breeder.... but as her Registered name is 'Absolutely Tikityboo''...we just call her Ticky...
Champ was called Champ when we got him..

Just remembered I changed another one! My first pony ( in the balc and white piccy below) Was called Whitney when i got him, but I changed it to Merlin. He was from beaulieu rd and only 6 months old so he didnt know it anyway and I was only 10 and didnt want my pony to have a girls name!

I bought my colt in april last year and he was named dandy but it really didn't suit him and everyone told me it was bad look to change his name, but i couldn't leave him called dandy so i named him Alfie and he's turned out to be one of the best behaved horses ive ever had - he is a little sweety and so well behaved for a colt - Ive been lucky
