As title, sorry its not a exciting competition report for you all, but with snow frozen menage, roads etc we haven't been up too much!
Had one problem after another with horses, and vet bills in the last few weeks so my wedding plans are on the cut back! (wedding is July!)
My coming 4 year old had nasty abscess under her jaw, so shes hopefully sorted now and is back eating and feeling better.
My chestnut boy had a snotty/slightly bloody nose, so vet gave him antibiotics to try and shift it. Hes had several sinus problems over the last 3 years, hole into sinus to flush twice, and bone flap op to remove puss in the sinus. So normally if hes a little snotty on the 'bad' side i don't worry, as it clears up after a few days. However this was the 'good' side, so i knew it wasn't going to be so simple.
So after a week and no improvement, i took him into the vets Friday..
Scoped to check guttural pouch (sp?) was OK, and it was. Xrays next, and showed something was indeed going on in the sinus. They made the hole in his head, (now will have two matching scars!) and scoped via that hole. Showed cysts in the sinus.
Hes not insured for sinus trouble, and i had to folk out for the first bone flap op on his right hand side, however we took him home after 3 days to do the aftercare ourselves.
So faced with two options, one to flush and see what happens (although vet said it wouldn't work) or operate.. no choice then really, so i left him at the vets and drove home crying!!
This is how i left him; Hole into sinus, and catheter in place..

Operation went well, and they removed cysts and also the lining of the sinus. Vet said if hes ok in the morning, she would be happy for me to take him home the next day!

So on sat afternoon i collected him, and settled him back at home, looking like this;

Vets back Friday to check him, and remove catheter and stitches out Monday hopefully.

Hope i've not put anyone off there lunch!!

My instructors old horse had this done. Once it was all healed up and the hair grown back you couldn't even see the tube sticking out unless you knew it was there. It had a very narrow diameter, probably 3mm max.
Will yours have to have a tube left in full time ?

No thats just so we are able to flush it out.. it gets removed on friday. He has had the tube for flushing in twice before (on the other side) and you can hardly see where it was, so im not worried about that at all.
Poor boy is the best behaved patient ever, loves the attention! Strange horse!

Forgot to add - a friend of hers had some sort of lazer machine and if he got 'bunged up' she would zap the area and all the snot and gunk would fall out (this was after surgery) and he still competed perfectly ok.
Not sure exactly what the machine was but I know she had to be trained to use it.

Aww - poor boy. Hope it works (my OH had it done and it's been brilliant but no idea whether the results are comparable :o - he did go private so guess the bill was similar :p)

Could you find out what the machine was? Just useful to know.

Thanks guys, he is eating and being his normal self.. just me thats worried to death about him!
