Would you consider loaning/selling your horse of 8 years and having a break from horses for a few years so that you could save up money to buy a new one which you could compete?

I really want to start competing and eventually event but realistically that's not going to happen with the horse i've got and i'm torn between settling for what i have as i love my horse to bits, or taking the steps required to make it happen? I can't afford to keep two and won't be able to save for a another whilst paying out for one i already have!

I'm so confused! I keep changing my mind but can't come to a proper decision at all!

see i couldn't have a break for a few yrs, i couldn't save! i'd be gutted knowing someone is enjoying my horse whilst i'm at home 'saving'. depends how much you want it really tho!!!

Saving wouldn't be a problem, I'm good at that when i want something in particular, but the day to day lifestyle would be hard, wouldn't know what to do with myself instead of going to the yard every day! But, on the other hand, I'm not really enjoying riding that much because I'm not really doing what i want to be doing and have to force myself to ride which makes me think, what's the point in paying out a lot of money for something when I'm not getting what i want out of it???

Can you see how i keep going round in circles!

Could you not sell your current horse and buy a youngster. If you bought a 2 - 3 year old you could buy it quite cheaply and in two years time you would have had all that time with the horse and may be ready to compete. If you're prepared to take a break of 2 years you won't be losing out and you wouldn't be missing out on your horsey lifestyle.
I bought a foal and brought her on myself and it's been very rewarding and I hope to be competing next year. I was in the position that I could no longer compete on my horse as he had got arthritis. Luckily for me though I managed to keep him at the same time.
Just a thought. Good luck with your decision.

What about; loan your horse, work or help out at weekends etc on an eventing yard, get involved with eventing that way while you save for horse?
Then your still involved in horses and gaining experiance ..

I've got a very busy year ahead of me work wise having just graduated and got the job i wanted so whilst it wouldn't be a problem with my current horse i wouldn't want to buy a youngster and then not have the time to bring it on properly in the short term. Therefore, if i did loan/sell mine i wouldn't be getting another straight away even if i could afford it.

I would still find a way to be involved with horses, whether lessons, helping out, friends horses etc. I think i'm just worried that if i did loan/sell mine that i would miss him and regret it! I've had him for such a long time that i would feel sooooo guilty...............but on the other hand, live is too short to not be doing what you want!
