I really like the yard murphy is at - he's happy and settled, the people are nice, the YM is really good....

BUT...

the school is not good. The surface is really poor, and even with a bit of rain it becomes really deep - at the moment I won't ride in it at all, and before we had all this rain I wasn't happy cantering Murph in it very much, and we couldn't really jump. I fully appreciate we've had a lot of rain, but it was too deep before all that rain.

YOs are, to be fair, trying to do something about it, but it's a bit too late really and they can't do anything at the mo because of the weather.

Murph really does need to be exercised 4-6 days a week, at the moment we can only go for a hack at weekends, and I don't hack alone so am reliant on someone being free to come with me if I want to ride at all.

So, I don't know whether to look for somewhere else?

Or do i just stick it out and accept I can't ride in the week until the school dries up (could be weeks and weeks)?

I just don't know what's best, I really like the yard and the people but not being able to ride is so frustrating espsh as I moved from a cheaper yard where I wouldn't have been able to ride in the week to this one so that I could

advice please?!

Do some enquiries as to what's available in your area, then you can make a shortlist and work out the pro's and cons of each option.

Is there any indoor school that you could hire and box to during the week? If you really like the yard its worth sticking it out for when the school is improved.

Well, there is Newbold Verdon EC - they have a website, there is Blaby - there are a couple in Blaby. There is james' yard where Hattie moved to. Have a look on the Welland valley feeds website, they usually advertise yards.

I think if I had not moved house I would have moved yards because of the school anyway - it's no good paying all that money and not being able to ride

Alas, I have no box and therefore no way of getting to an indoor school

I don't mind riding in the horrible weather, I just don't like how deep the school is.

I'm a bit gutted about not being able to do any jumping, as I was jsut getting over my fear of it before xmas.

but the people are so nice there...I'm so torn

I know what you mean Bex - could you not encourage the rest of the yard to go with you?

It's a difficult one, because you need to be able to ride, otherwise there is no point having the horse, but you also want to enjoy the yard and not end up somewhere bitchy and horrible!

It won't do any harm just to have a look around and see what else is available locally. Look for ads in local tack shops and feed stores. Do you have a local country or equestrian advertiser that you could check out as well?

I would look at what other yards are available, and you don't need to tell anyone you are doing this. I had a similar dilemma at my old yard, because the yard itself was gorgeous and new, the other liveries were wonderful and it was close to home and work - but despite lovely big fields the turnout was v restricted (even in the summer) and the Yo's partner was a bit of a nut. But after quietly looking around and visiting a number of yards I found the one I'm at now and I'm so glad I moved. Ironically the horses have all been in for the last week because the fields are so wet, but I don't mind because I know there is a good reason, I know that George gets attention and adlib hay and goes on the horse walker twice a day. It's a really hard decision and when I made it I was terrified I'd done the wrong thing, but its worked out ok and I still meet up with some of the girls from the old place.

that's what I'm hoping...jumpthemoon do you know any of the little places in Blaby?

But then if I went, and they sorted out the school 2 weeks later I'd be a bit gutted! BUT, the hacking is not great, although I do have nice hacking partners.

Maybe if you went somewhere a bit more out in the country, you'd be able to pluck up the courage to hack on your own?

I do know a nice yard near Wigston, but I bet that's too far for you, isn't it?
