I was rug/winter blanket hunting for my new weanling mini yesterday and was having a hard time finding items that would fit him. He is so tiny! I did find a special mini website but was shocked that the rugs cost more than a large horse rug! He will be grown out of this so fast I was not sure I wanted to invest that kins of money as it seemed like extortion because they know these sizes are hard to find.
So I came across these dog rugs/coat and had a long look at them and saw no obvious reason why not to try one? They are about $25 USD compared to nearly $200+ for the specialty mini foal ones

Here are pics of two options and tell me your thoughts. It will be used for a couple months at most. Please tell me if you see anything about them that may be unsafe or unsuitable

not sure this one is waterproof but I really like it

I did find this one that is priced great and says it is for a foal or mini and adjusts from 28 in to 41. This one may be more practical long term and it is made for minis too I am just concerned it will be far too small right now while he is a baby hence the dog blanket idea.

You can stop laughing now :p

I'm no expert but I would have thought they would be fine. I bought a couple of dog coats from Robinsons (over here) for a foal, years ago, they were exactly the same as horse rugs but smaller and no leg straps (but I wouldn't have used them anyway). Once foal had grown up I sold them on eBay and both went as foal rugs so I can't be the only one!

Have we seen any pictures of your new addition? :)

Given that they are so cheap I'd have thought it was worth a try, especially if you're handy with a needle and cotton and have some "spares" from old rugs in case any modification is necessary.

If you have a trusted UK friend, why not get them to buy some over here?
My tack shop have just started a mini range and nothing is over £25!!!! Sizes start at 2'9 and go upto 4'3!

Thanks for the input! I was hoping I was not the only one with this idea. Some of them even have the leg straps too but I'd have to look at them to see how they would work out. If all else fails and they are ill fitting when they get here I can also send them back.
I have pics of him on my facebook but have hardly been on here all summer so not got around to intorducing him on HHO yet. :) I will take some new pics of his this afternoon and put them up. He is such a little doll :)

We definately need pictures on here.

A mini yearling.. are you sure the dog rugs will be small enough!

What about a babygrow? :D

in USD? Wow that suprises me as I thought stuff was usually higher over there. So that makes them about 15 GBP? I will have to check into that if these do not work out

Excellent plan! I like the Pessoa one :D. Can you ring the supplier and ask if waterproof?

Good to hear you by the way :D

Good to catch you too :) I hope you have been well.

I love the Pessoa one the best too. I think trying to call to find out is a great idea but my instincts tell me it is 'weatherproof' and not waterproof so if it is then it is a no go. I am off to measure the little guy now to get an idea of size.

hi, i used dog coats on my foal when he was born last year. His clever mother decided to have him during an bad spell of weather & he got very cold.
This his him modeling his rugs:

They do slip a bit but not as bad as you would expect.

I have two Masta dog rug coats, they are quilted and thick, size 24 and 26 inch I think (would have to double check), they have hardly been used, the bigger one worn twice and the smaller one tried on but not used. If you want I can take pics and email them to you, would be happy to post them to you if you want them? Would save you some pennies? PM me if you want.

Happy measuring :D

I'm fine ta :D. Um. Broke my back a few weeks ago, but can still walk etc., so not so bad :). Maybe pony will fit the Pessoa one in the Spring?? :D

Oh I really appreicate that offer. I have not been out to measure him yet ( got sidetracked) but I would love to see yours if they are the correct size! :)

Now that is just about as adorable as it comes! Thanks for sharing and that is quite reassuring

Lol hun :D. I count myself very lucky in all ways :D. Given the amount of riding I was doing, and that the Dizz can be a bat but she didn't do anything wrong, so I don't have to deal with a 'dangerous' horse just one that jumps a bit higher than anticipated lol, I'm incredibly lucky :) And that I can walk :D And I'm not in pain as such, more niggles now :D.

So much to be thankful for... I know I'm pee'd off at missing camp and at not riding and so on, etc. (I'm not exactly Pollyanna lol), I will be back and life goes on :).

And those rugs of loz9 look great :D, especially the striped one :D :D

Thankyou! Sadly hes not so cute anymore at 16mths old showing me his lovely belly far too often & now fitting rugs sized 5'6'' :o Who'd have thought he used to wear a 28'' dog coat! lol!

Thankyou! The striped one had to be bought! lol! it was in the sale & i wont turn down a bargain! lol!

I am second guessing myself now. I just measured him and came up with a 31 in size?
The highest dog rug I see is in 29 and he is for sure smaller than an average Lab so not sure how that works. Do they measure them the same? I did a loose and generous measure from center of his chest to center of his rear giving myself plenty of wiggle room. Maybe I am best to spend double and invest in the Kensington? At least it will grow with him. It supposedly goes down to a 28 so worth a try. I still appreciate all of your input and I will let you know how it all works out :)

I think my dog rugs were measured along the back, so wither to tail.
Just been flicking through some old pics & another good small rug i used were made by IV horse. Not sure if you can get hold of them in the US but i believe they went quite small.

Just realise how small 31" actually is! he must be adorable! :D

Hi Jade, lovely to hear from you!! Where are the pics!!! Info re breeding etc!!!!

I tried dog rugs on Inky when he was a weanling but tbh they went really deep enough in the chest area. I get my rugs from a lovely lady over here it costs about £45 sterling for a quilted rug and about £55 for outdoor one. I can ask her this weekend if she would ship to the USA and how much she think it would cost??

I have also had stuff imported form Star lake minatures USA, they are very good, the rugs seem alot cheaper than $200!! and im presuming the delivery wouldnt be too high??

My mini icon Stinkbomb!!! I was hoping to hear from you. How is Inky? are you still showing him and what have you guys been up to? Cashew( if you remember him from 3 years ago) fell into it with a great life. He is a few miles down the road from me and living in a small herd of minis owned by a retired man who adores them and spoils them rotten. I go and visit him often.
