But I can't remember whether you can bury them on your own land.

Also how much does it cost to have one PTS and body removed by the vet if he can't be buried at home.

Thankyou.

You can't bury your horse unless you have special persmission (I presume from DEFRA???).

I had Monty PTS by the knakerman (free bullet) and the cost was £180 including disposal (I didn't have ashes back).

The vet quoted me around £500 for PTS by injection and and disposal.

not sure of this, my son has buried a few horses on folks private land, as long as its not near a waterway-holes dug by jcb.

Our farmer has buried a couple but he had to have special written permission. I reckon you could get in a bit of trouble for randomly burying a horse, I could be very wrong though :) I usually am!!

our boys and girls will go to a neighbouring kennels, job done professionally and for nothing, their last hunting job with hounds!!

Yes thats an idea, this horse has served no useful purpose his whole life he might as well be of use to someone in death.

you could well be right, but what the eye doesn't see--- and rules are made to be broken!! i take no responsibility for the actions of others!

I think if you class your horse as a pet it is legal if you follow the guidelines:-

* at least 250m away from any well borehole or spring that supplies water

* at least 30m from any other spring or watercourse, and at least 10m from a field drain

* have at least 1m of subsoil below the bottom of the burial pit, allowing a hole deep enough for at least 1m of soil to cover the carcass

* when first dug, the bottom of the hole must be free of water

However, each authority may have its own separate guidelines.

Horse owners in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should consult their respective non-agricultural departments for advice.

In England, for more information (tel: 08459 335577) or visit www.defra.gov.uk

Thats very helpful thankyou.

My horse was pts at Liphook last month. They charged £89 for the disposal of the body. The drugs cost another £150.

Thats not far from me then. I would resent having to pay loads of money to have him PTS tbh so may look into that. Thankyou.

It is essential that Permission is obtained from DEFRA beforehand.

We have buried 4 horses (plus several dogs) on our land and we did not have to get permission from DEFRA - we did asked the vet as well prior to having those PTS as they were PTS but injection. He said it wasn't an issue. Whether that's 100% correct or not I don't know but it's done now! One of the horses died of natural causes and we just buried him too.

Last year i had my lad PTS last year and the vet fees came to £160 and the Hunt collected for £150.

I was on livery so i didn't have the option to bury him but cremation with ashes returned i was quoted at £475.

Your local council, im sure would be able to advise or a quick phone call to DEFRA.

if horse dies on friday evening and want to bury him/her do you have to wait till monday morning to phone defra? body could be a bit high this weather.

i would do the same jlk, as long as sensable what harm is there, then when my time is up i want to go next to them and my dogs.

LOL! I was told by a vet, if he died (Horse not vet), to find someone with a JCB and bury them quick before anyone else noticed. :D
